Best paint for aluminium

Hi guys,

Making a system for my younger sis for christmas.

Decided to paint the outside of it striped pink.

The finish on it is kind of a gloss smooth aluminium.

Going out tomorrow to pick up some paint, does anyone know what the best paint would be to use for this job? Won't be paintin the inside, leaving that silver, Just the top and sides striped (yes, using masking tape) and part of the front Will have a small line design on it, for character;). It also has to be pretty durable, shes only 9 so I know theres going to be stickers being added during the build.

Also, is it best to sand before starting? Reason I ask is because, having paint being run over a smooth metal sounds like I'm gonna get some flakeyness. But on the otherhand, sanding scratches, maybe enough to make it show through through a few layers of paint? Im not sure, which is why Im asking:)

Thanks

I'll be replying in the morning, as its 3.40am here right now.

Thanks for any replies!

A good quality enamel (spay) paint would work fine. Yes, sand the area that you want to paint with 600 - 800 grit sandpaper to remove any glossy surface area. Sanding with this fine grit will promote adhesion and shouldn't leave any sand scratches.

Also, if you want clean line between the stripes, goto an automotive paint supply store and get tape for masking lines ( I forget the proper name for it but they will know what you want). That is a special masking tape that (unlike standard masking tape) has very smooth edges and will leave very clean lines.

I think that it's cool that you are taking the time to customize a computer for you sister! I bet that she will really like it.

Go to any car accessory shop like Halfords and pick up your spray paint. Do not try to cover in one go but gradually build up the finish with 3 or 4 layers otherwise it will run.
