Best processor available for Socket 462?

What is the best processor available for a socket 462 motherboard?

The processor I have now is an AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 2.1 GHz. The reason I ask is because I'm looking to spend around $250-$300 on upgrading my current computer to run a few new games until I can get a new computer in a few months.

I recently tried the Test Drive Unlimited demo, and couldn't run the game even though I barely met minimum requirements. The game ran, but at a very low and choppy frame rate.

i don't think you can get much faster than that on a socket a mobo.. you should upgrade!:) If that's not an option you'll have better luck upgrading your gpu. what gfx do you have right now? am i right in assuming it's agp?

Yeah, it's a ATI Radeon 9550 AGP. (256 MB)

Also, I have 1 GB of ram (the minimum for the game I want to play), but it's very slow at only 166 MHz. Will upgrading that help with framerate?

I can only go with 1GB of ram, as buying 2GB would not be worth it for only a few months. I was thinking of maybe upgrading to PC3200 400MHz? Would that be a good framerate booster?

that's ddr ram, correct? pc3200' s 400mhz is in reality only 200.. double pumped cause its ddr. so if yours is ddr 166 your effectice speed is actually 684mhz. upgrading to pc3200 would not yield a good enough performance jump to justify the money spent. 2gigs of memory WILL help in games though.. one of the best agp cards out there is a x1900pro. so if your serious you should go with that or something similar. i.e 7600gt, x850xt.. etc

Being a Socket A in all honesty I would not upgrade anything, even in short term it would be a waste of money! I would keep your 250-300 bucks and put it in your new system in a few months.

Would either of these be a good choice?

When I ran the demo of that game on the 9550, it would be OK for maybe 2-3 minutes, and then it would get extremely choppy. I thought it was the processor heating up and slowing down, but maybe it is the video card.
The x1300 is also a horrible card. The x1600PRO is decent, but you can find cards alot better for the money.

I would go with one of these:

I'll think about that 7600. I'm beginning to think though that I might as well just wait for my new computer and just not be able to play the game until then.

I would go with a 7600gt. you might be able to find it for less than $130.. better deal than the 7800gs in my opinion.. the other two are good cheap cards :)

Although I would much rather be able to play it now, I think that it's kind of silly to spend all of that money to play one game now that I think about it.

It's like turning that $40 game into a $200 game. Not worth it. I think I'll just wait. Thanks for all the help.
