Best server cpu.

Hey guys,
I'm planning to build a server pc.
But the thing is, I got not that much money :P.
Whats the best server-cpu for the money?
I want to stay under 200euro's.

what I'm going to do on the pc is:
- running websites
- a minecraft server
- maybe a server from another game.

The rest of the pc I can handle myself :D

Smile

Doubt you'd really be able to get yourself a server-grade chip for less than 200 Euros, unless you got a good deal on a used Xeon or Opteron.

for the price...i think the euro is more than the dollar right now? that might be your pony there, find a nice workstation board and ecc ram, and you should have a capable and efficient server, 65W is damn nice.. in euros thats about 180 euro, so i think that fits the bill, ram might be a little pricier, and so will the motherboard, but if your going to be going and doing a dedicated server...why not do it right?

I don't suggest overclocking if your going to be doing server work, your just asking for stupid crap to happen. Servers are trucks, they need to just work. Thats the reason for the ECC ram and workstation board, its just going to be in a corner crunching numbers, get a board that can do that without sucking a ton of juice, ocing the FX will suck more juice than the Xeon will stock.

But do you know a cpu which can run a mc server without problems? which is cheap?

My friend used to run MC on a athlon 64 x2 6000+ with 2 gig of ram, but still id suggest stuff beefier if you wanted to run say, your own exchange server and stuff, and actually get some legitimate use out of it.

I didn't think you needed that much of a powerful machine for a Minecraft server? http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Server#Server_requirements going by what is said there, pretty much any machine you could build today for a decent sum would be fine.

I don't think there's a need for workstation boards and server-grade CPUs and ECC RAM for Minecraft servers, could be wrong of course though.

Deal is its not just doing minecraft, and if plans change and needs more, can just drop a more potent xeon in later, but if hes really serious about keeping a server, use server grade hardware.

Anything that requires your data going in and coming out with no chance of being altered in any way. ECC is very important there. and to be honest im not seeing a big diff from the cost of a IB i5 and that Xeon, but thats me.

...yes but the Xeon boards and the ECC RAM will probably be more expensive than an LGA 1155 board and regular DDR3, and that's before you've considered SCSI hard disks and stuff.

I think Smile is only wanting this for a Minecraft server and some other 'light stuff' really, so I don't think a Xeon and suchlike is necessary for the time being - I don't think a Xeon and the other stuff is necessary for a Minecraft server after having looked at what spec machines is recommended.

I agree though if he wants the best future proofing possible and more expandability in the future then buying server grade stuff would be much better.

It is not *that* much more expensive than a quality motherboard and good solid ram, I do not see what your arguing over, its like 50 bucks different at most, CPU was about 180 bucks, motherboard was 180 to 220, depending on what you picked, and 8 gig of ram is about 60 bucks vs 40, for cheap clocker crap... regardless your nickel and diming over something that will be on for 24/7/365, why have a chance at a failure?

Second thought, if hes not wanting to spend on dedicated hardware, why not just run the minecraft server on his main desktop in a VM 24/7? he has the hardware, he could just use that.

yep. thats the deal. then, later, he can get a better machine if needed and just copy it over. Good deal.
