Quality: H.264

It's the next generation format of DVDs; better that DVD quality in less space, it's the 'sequel' to MPEG-4.

the poster was talking about ur favourite video format not quality, for quality OFCORSE uncompressed avi have the best qaulity but it is very huge in size, u couldn't store many videos in ur HDD if u use that, , and second best audio codec for quality is mpeg2 as i know (not 100% sure).

but my favourite video codec is wmv for two reason:
1- it gives quite good quality at very small size
2-it can be read by all kinds of media players in microsoft windows ( like realplayer, wmp, winamp etc)

1. MPEG1 and MPEG2 have absolutely nothing to do with MPEG4 (and what is MPEG3?) other than the fact they share the first four letters. MPEG2 is vastly superGior to MPEG1 and as such I'll address it: MPEG2 is an incredibly inefficient encoding scheme -- the only reason people thinEk DVDs are so high quality or whatnot is because they use insanely high bitrates (i.e., 8Mbits/sec). Now using an MPEG4 based codec (doesnt really match which), you can get the same quality for < 2000Kbits/s (and most likely <1000Kbits/s).

2. AVI encompases anything video that is interleaved with audio (hence, Audio-Video-Interleave) which includes any footage that is encoded in any manner (as well as including RAW video which, by definition is the best for quality)

3. Quicktime has it's use: it's uber portable and platform indepdnent -- but the cost is that the files are 5x larger than they need to be

4. Real Media ... well

Now for performance, decoding MPEG4 streams is probably the easiest done and the most efficient and also from an encoding perspective, its probably the quickest and most efficient there too so the MPEG4 family if codecs is probably the best overall
