Best VPN software (or hardware?)

I'm trying to get a VPN assembled with a bunch of friends, so we can play with the LAN option in some games over the internet.

Does anyone have any experience with VPNs and that sorta thing?

What software is a good idea? Should I use Windows 2000 for everyone to connect to?

And how can I make clients that my friends can just setup without configuring so that it doesn't get complicated on their end?

Any help is much appreciated.
 
REALVNC for VPN but you need to have a server, who has VPN set up on it so as to allow connections.
they will need to setup that vpn form Network connections on their pc in any case
