Best way to keep new Dell Desktop backed up?

I am just about to get a Dell E510 desktop. I will need a way to backup my data and pics, ect. What is the best device that I can buy to accomplish this? I will likely need to backup just a few GB of data and pics. I was thinking about an external ZIP Drive or something similar. Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks

ZIP disks are way overpriced.

yes they are, and for the space on thoes things, your better off getting a USB 5GB External HDD

WHat does a DVD burner hold? I believe that one is included on my new desktop. I have looked at external HD's, but should I backup all of my data on something that is more portable like a disk or something similar? Also, with a portable hard drive - could this be more prone to get infected with a virus should one find its way onto my computer? Thanks

a DVD Burner can hold anywhere from ~4.7GB - 8.5GB.

You get 2 identical hard drives, and the second HDD mirrors the first. You'd need SATA drives, and would have to buy a RAID controller, unless your dell's motherboard comes with one, which I would highly doubt

Ok - I am looking to spend around $100 - $140 though. How about an external HD or just using the DVD that comes with the desktop?

Whatever you want. RAID1 would be good if you wanted everything on your HDD backed up, but for just some specific photos and files, a DVD burner will do just fine..

You can use RAID 1 on IDE drives as well, no need for SATA, although you will need a controller card. IMO, it's going to be a little expensive and not really thorough. It will only help if your HDD dies, but if your data is accidentally deleted, you get a virus, or your computer is stolen etc... RAID 1 will not help. DVD backup is good in general, and fairly cheap, but more time consuming than an external HDD (more reliable though, IMO).

What is RAID1?
RAID 101

I get what you're saying although id use the word "mirrored" ... backing up involves a bit of user control .... mirroring is done whether you want it or not
