Between ATI and Nvidia who makes better video cards?

Neither make higher or lower quality cards. GPU's are binned and tested before being sent out for retail so you can expect the same kind of quality from either.

Quality also depends on what brands use what parts. Cheaper brands use custom designs which strip out non-essential parts which can sometimes affect quality.

Of course, sometimes a faulty card slips through on either side, as they are bought in bulk.

The only things you want to worry about are performance, power consumption and warranty.

How about a lifespan test? which is more durable? Nvidia or ATI?

Both will last years, and years, and years. If you were to get say an Nvidia card that failed with in the first week though, that doesn't mean all Nvidia cards are rubbish and you should immediately go to ATi instead, both Nvidia and ATi make millions of chips and out of those it is a very, very tiny number that slip through the very tight quality control net. The same goes for if you bought an EVGA card that failed, it doesn't mean all EVGA cards are going to fail, it just means that particular one got through, it can happen with any manufacturer

Zotac tend to make some of the cheapest video cards, and it isn't because of quality, they make excellent cards and motherboards, so you can't generalise and say "all cheaper brands use lower quality parts" because that is just not true. The fact that Zotac cards come with lifetime warranty shows that

Also, you want to look at heat, by which I mean heat output and cooling sollution, what outputs the card has (if you need multiple monitors that use certain ports), price compared to other cards...

AFAIK you can't use the other card to hook up extra monitors if they're set up in SLI.

Not true. I have a SLI setup and I have used multiple monitors spanning both cards. It used to be that way quite a while ago though.

As others have said, they each have their goods and bads. Although it seems a lot of game companies are partnered with Nvidia (although that may just be the games I play), as I see the Nvidia sign come up with a lot of games.
And as Nevakonaza said, PhysX is really cool with Nvidia, you don't notice it until you play on a ATi card and then go back to Nvidia.

That being said, it really depends on you, the buyer.

Please state your:

budget,
intended use
current set up including PSU
future use (if different from above)
monitor resolution

only then would a recommendation make sense.

Buy whatever's cheapest on the particular day you decide to make the purchase.

They both have competing/similar features, and will both last until well after you're bored with the performance it affords you.

They'll both be 1/2 as cool as you anticipate, and a few weeks from installation, you'll stop thinking about it at all.

Basically I'm talking about performance and features. Basically which one does better in performance and their features.

I'll probably be using it for a variety of things.

Video editing/rendering, gaming, graphic editing/creation, sound editing/creation, etc. Basically a lot of media creation and media related tasks.

But like I said I also see that everyone will have their own opinions as to what works "best"

But I liked reading people's opinions. :) That was nice to see the different responses.

i have to say both are good i owned a HD 4850 1GB ( my first ATI card) i have to say i was impress on how good it handled games.

both are good companys both have there goods and bads, but at the end of the day it a matter on what you prefer to go with. only reason i got a GTX 460 1GB is because i wanted to play on DX-11. if DX-11 never showen its face i will still stick with my HD 4850 1GB which i still have as a back up if my 460 ever fails on me :)

You made it sound like AMD/ATI doesnt have directX 11. You do know all of AMD/ATI 5000/6000 series cards have DirectX 11.
