beware TigerDirect closedown sales

Went in this afternoon looking for a basic desktop for my wife to use for Word-processing duties and internet hookup. Got a good deal on a 'new' unit, only to get home and discover that we not only had a used unit on our hands, but one that's password protected - we can't even get into the damn thing!

Clearly during this close-down phase the employees of TigerDirect are happy to lie their faces off about their products they're selling, reinforcing the process on your way out that 'sales are final' and no refunds are offered. So I guess if you get home and find a couple of bricks in your carton you're also screwed.

I'm taking it back to argue for a refund, but in the meantime - does anyone know some way to bypass the password in Win7 so I can reset it, other than just doing a fresh install of the OP? I'm figuring we're going to get stuck with it.

In the meantime, please steer clear of Tiger Direct and its stores - they clearly have no scruples about pulling any trick to sell off their junk leftovers. Now I understand why there's signs everywhere saying 'please don't open the boxes'!

Just run the factory recovery on it. That'll wipe it back to factory settings like it was new out of the box.

I shop Tiger all the time, have one about an hour away. I never buy a closeout item that looks like its been open already, you don't know what you are getting. Never had an issue with them at all. But yes, do as Voyagerfan has said and perform the system recovery.

funny enough, that's exactly what I did, sort of in desperation. Was surprised it worked so easily. I guess the deal is to protect what's there, but they don't give a crap if you're wiping it all - too bad if you do that to someone out of malice, though I guess the lesson there is to always back everything up.

As for the box, no, I'm always wary of stuff like that in any big box store, because people return crap all the time and they just shove it back on the shelves half the time without really checking to see if there's any issues. This box looked pristine, without the usual signs of being re-taped - it was amongst a bunch of other 'new' PC's being sold off, separate to the other area where they're selling refurbished units. Plus the guy, having talked to us about the refurbished units, took us over to this other section and gave us the 'why not buy one of these new ones instead?" spiel. I mean, if a sales rep tells you something's new, you assume you're being told the truth, at least in a well-known chain store. Also bear in mind this isn't a closeout' sale, but a closing down sale. They obviously did have closeout sections, but I didn't go anywhere near those.
