Big problem

Hey. I'm not quite sure where to post this. I just got given a computer and the psu was dead. I replaced it but the computer wouldn't start up. It starts to run, the fans switch on, and then it just shuts off. I've replaced the thermal paste in the CPU and in the heat sink, and I've changed the motherboard battery as well. There's no shorts or anything, and I've unplugged all non essential components. I've tried it with an without the cd drive. I've replaced the memory. I took out the battery, held the power button, replaced the battery, held the button again and plugged it in and tried turning it on. Fans start, lights flash then nothing. Can anyone help? I'm at a loss...

Does it let off any beeps or signals from the onboard speaker?
Check out Spirit's Guide. It is quite useful for a computer that will not start.

How long does it stay on for? Does it boot at all?

You can read my guide and see if there is anything else you can do, but it sounds to me like your board or power supply is dead.

Couple of things you can do: have you tried running the board with a different power supply? Or have tested your current power supply in another PC to see if you get the same problem?

Have you also taken the board out of the case and try to power the board up whilst it's running on something like cardboard or wood or something? Just to ensure there are no shorts at all.

I assume you would have already done this, but have you tried removing the graphics card, if there is one you can remove?

Hey. So, it stays on for between 2 to 6 seconds. Sometimes beeps, sometimes doesn't, depending how long it manages to stay on for. The power supply works in other computers. It's fairly new, so... I also tried with a different one with the same results. I've taken out the board. There's no burnt circuits or components, no cracks or rust. It's actually a really nice motherboard. No graphics card to remove. I removed the network card thing, but nothing changed. It's like it's trying to boot up bit can't quite figure out how... I think I already read your guide, spirit, but ill do it again just in case I missed something. It also needs to be unplugged and left for a minute or two before it starts at all. It's weird. Thanks for your help, guys...

Yeah I think you've got a bad motherboard though. Even if you find bent pins in the CPU socket, it'll be hard to straighten them up, so you'll need to be careful.

Have you taken out the motherboard from the case and do a barebone test?

That's with just the CPU/HS and one stick ram with the mobo on a flat non-conductive surface. Hook the power cables of PSU to the board and short the power SW pins with screwdriver.

Of course have the monitor hooked up too. :)
