i set it on auto, when i tried to manually imput the device, it still doesn't work

What you said here is the auto detection of the secondary IDE channel. What I meant was enabling the secondary channel.
On ASUS P4S800-MX there is an option to enable or disable the primary or secondary IDE channels - in the BIOS this can be found on the BIOS advance menu, under chip configuration. Make sure that both IDE channels are set to enabled.

yeah, both of the IDE channels are set to enabled. i think i've tried every
option in BIOS. do you think i have a defective board?

See post2 .. even if you swap the drive position relative to the cable, you'll need to set the jumpers on the HDD :)

Yep: think you had one set as Primary and one set as CS? :)

confused!

my p4s800 have the same problem, the secondary IDE is not working, so do I need to set the dvd, cd player on cable select, what about the hard drive? cable select too?

That cable select is buggie, I always set harddrive as master on IDE 1 on end of cable and second harddrive as slave on middle connector- DVD burner as master on IDE 2 on end of cable and dvd-rom as slave on middle of cable
