Motherboard: MSI KT4AV; AMI BIOS Ver 5.1

Problem: My problem just started last week when my monitor was garbled by squares, question marks, red lines, characters, etc. it appears when booting up and even when entering BIOS setup. It then gave problems with my Windows XP Operating System. It doesn't boot up anymore and keeps resetin.

What I did: formated the harddrive and tried to install a clean Windows XP OS but then it gave me a warning that my BIOS is not fully compatible with ACPI feature and that needed an upgrade. This warning never occured when i purchased the unit and installed the OS. So I flashed my bios using the updated version which i activated from the harddrive using Windows98 bootable CD, then cleared the CMOS and installed a clean Windows98 OS coz i planned to salvage my files first before setin up Windows XP as my final OS.. Still those monitor characters appeared!

What I did next: i flashed again my BIOS with the same files i previously used but this time, I activated it from the diskette, which I believe was a big mistake coz i read the big warning from the manual that says NOT TO FLASH FROM A DISKETTE!!!

Current Problem: My unit doesn't boot up anymore but keeps on beeping once ever five seconds.

HOW SHOULD I GO ABOUT THIS? I really need help on this coz I can't do my work without my PC! Thank you in advance!

Yes, I agree the original problem was the vid card. Now, however, you have a corrupted BIOS and your motherboard is trash.

beep pattern: 1 short beep in every 5-6 sec. I've searched the net and it means DRAM refresh failure. I also tried my video card to other computers and it was fine. I also tried a different video card with my unit and i had the same problem.

Somebody gave me this tip:
Here are the steps:
- Take out your BIOS chip, don't touch the pins! wrap it in foil or find a way to short circuit all the pins
- bring it to a friend who has the same mobo
- bring you CD or HDD (dont use diskette) that contains the BIOS ROM file and the utility flasher
- boot your friend's PC to DOS
- while still on, use your hands to take out your friends CMOS chip, wrap it in foil
- take your own CMOS chip, take it out of the foil, and insert it to the socket, PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE ORIENTATION (location of Pin 1)
- now perform your usual flashing
- after successfully flashing it, take it out, wrap it in foil (btw, i said wrap in foil to prevent ESD damage)
- put back your friends CMOS chip to his mobo, take it out of the foil of course
- go home, insert your chip, power up, cross your fingers and hope it works ;-)

"Will this work?"
