BIOS update

I am re-building a Dell Inspiron 531S. The BIOS seems intact yet when it shows the CPU it states it is an AMD but it does not show the specifics of it.
I know that updating or upgrading the BIOS could be a cause of the issue. I am stuck at that point, so I will explain:

There is no DVD ROM for this machine presently. When I attempt to install a SATA HDD it shows no SATA drive present (I know this can be caused from a BIOS issue also). It does recognize USB peripherals so keyboard and mouse are not an issue.
I need to know if the BIOS can be updated from a thumb drive. If possible, how can I accomplish this procedure, and what would it entail to make this happen?

I do not know a lot about the Dell inspiron, however you may find near the internal battery a BIOS switch. (jumper)

This is normally 3 pins with either pins 1 & 2 connected or pins 2 & 3 connected.

One state is the RUN mode and the other is to clear the bios and force the default load.

If you decide to do this - first disconnect the power feed. reverse the connections and leave for about 5 seconds, then return to normal. Reconnect the power and start up in BIOS mode. Select the defaults or Optimised setting.

This should clear the problem, however like any tampering with the BIOS, it is a one way street, with no undo mode.
