BIOS update

Someone told me to do a BIOS update on my new build. I never did a BIOS update so I'm afraid to do a BIOS update. What can go wrong and how would I fix it because I just spent a grand building this new computer?

could rack a motherboard and destroy it. One note though. i always looked at the updates to find out what they were for. Gonna make your system faster. fix problems with say hardware issues. the updates might not apply to you. don't take if not needed. critical update ya could. dont take it just because its there.

Sounds like very good advice and I found out my BIOS date is 5/12/14 which sounds pretty new to me. But where would I find the BIOS update and what it will do for the MSI Z97 U3 Plus motherboard?

There is no need to update the bios unless the update actually fixes an issue you are currently having. If everything is fine, then don't update. You take a great chance of bricking the motherboard if done wrong.

Bios updating has a small degree of risk, but is very overblown in terms of you should be scared to do it.

I routinely update the bios on every machine I work on and have never had any problems, updating the bios nowadays is much simpler and easier than years ago, simply download the bios update for your motherboard the only thing to watch out for is the revision of your motherboard some may have more than one revision, if you are not sure check the bios history of say revision 1 and make sure the bios numbers tie up with your bios number for instance if your current bios is version f4 then there should be an f4 in the bios download list.

Once you have correct bios file in most cases you just put it on an empty thumb drive and enter your motherboards bios and select the bios flash utility, it should automatically pick up the correct bios file, click on it to run and that should be it.

The only time I would not recommend bios updating is if you live in an area that has regular power cuts.

I plug in my keyboard and mouse into the USB3 ports to see if that would make a difference and when I did the computer started up from being turned completely off. I turned it off and unplugged the mouse and the computer started up again. I'm wondering if there could be a short in the motherboard? I was thinking of putting in another hard drive and putting the bare windows on it and see if the power options sill do this and if so do a BIOS upgrade and if that don't work send it back because there is something wrong with the motherboard?
