so i know how to update the bios on a motherboard. im planning on getting a motherboard for an opteron or x2. my question is that you need to update the bios for the opteron to work. does that mean you update it before you put the opteron in or do you put the opteron in and then update it?

if the mobo is a bit older than the CPU, the mobo might need a BIOS update to bring it up to date but if the mobo and CPU are made realatively around the same time, a BIOS update is usually not needed. For example, pretty much all socket 939 mobos support almost all socket 939 CPUs since the socket 939 technology isn't very old. But if you use an old socket A mobo with a new socket A CPU, then you might run into problems. Just get Everest Home Edition and see what your motherboard is and post it. This might help.

If it fits, you should be able to boot enought o update the BIOS. What mobo do you intend to use? And with which CPU? (btw you cant post without a CPU)
