I recently updated my mobo BIOS through internet after building a brand new computer.. right after my windows would not start after a shut down, after some trys it did load the windows but the computer would lock up randomly and had to be shut down manually. now i am very sure this is related to bios update i did since it started right after i did it. is there anyway to restore the previous bios? dose system restore do this?

Any help appreciated.

the mother board:

No! The system restore feature rolls back the system registry not the bios programming for the board.

Running Asus boards here I've never seen a problem using one of their Windows versions for updating while you should be able to put an earlier version of the bios on without problems in case you had a imcomplete flash seen. When going for an update for the board I generally wait for a period of time in case the board itself sees a problem. The first board on the recent build here quit in 3 days ruling out the need for any update.

Another thought would be removing the battery on the board for 30 seconds to clear the cmos and then load the optimized defaults. Then make any needed setting changes. Sometimes that will tend to refresh the cmos information.

Besides the startup problem locks seen in Windows could be video driver related if there are faults with the memory installed. That would then be software or hardware related and not simply the update. On a recent build here the ATI Catalyst 7.9 seen one the software disk as well as at the support site was the problem. I then waited for the 7.10 to see everything cleared up.

one quick reply before i leave. Can ya try starting again and hitting 'F8' and start windows in safe mode. thats a start.

flashing is risky........unless ya really need it.
i'll check back later.

well the manual talks about a crashfree BIOS that might recover it. i tried using the ASUS ez flash to update my bios again to lastest version (different thatn the internet one) and now the computer just keep s crashing after it loads windows

any ideas? :(:(

^^ by crashing i meant it will restart without a reason 5-10 minutes after window loads
Should i try installing older version of the bios from Asus site? (one i updated was from 2008, there are few from 2007)

I can load windows now, it just randomly restarts when it loads.

It sounds more like a problem being seen besides the bios version currently on. On a new build seeing restarts you have to start looking at other things like a defective cap on the board or a lack of regulation of power for some reason in the supply as well as possible defects in memory. Generally any Asus winflash utility works without problems while it may contain fixes for a particular chipset.

well the reason i say it might be the bios is that i installed everything on it for a day & played around with it with no problems. today i tried updating hte bios and i am having all this problems...

Update: after 4 random retstarts i have the computer on for 45 minutes or so right now, hopefully it will stablize automaticly(lol).. crosses fingues

Hopefully it won't turn out to be a supply or board problem being the actual source. Since this is being seen after only one day of use there's no guarranty on just what is the actual cause being seen.

On the recent build here the power button simply saw a quick flash of the activity led and fans spin for about two seconds after 3 full days of use. By simple coincidence if the board is going to fail on you the update just happened to be installed as the problems were surfacing.

The Asus support page for the bios updates shows two for each date of release. One is strictly for dos use while the other is crossplatform between the different OSs. http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P5K-E&type=map&mapindex=1

If you by chance ended on a different model's download page you would have inadvertently installed an update for the wrong board. That would another last thought to consider explaining the problems being seen if no hardware faults are realized.

I got the 2008 bios from here
http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P5K-E&type=map&mapindex=1

my version comes with WIFI so i choose that option (the link you have is just for P5K-E) so its the right downlaod i beleive.. that said this time the computer was on for 1 hours before randomly shuting down again.. much longer than last times but the problem is still likely happening.

is it possible to load an older bios version or am i stuck with this version?

I can try to flash the bios from the link you gave me since it is a newer version (to see if it is more stable), will it have problems since it is for non WIFI?

The link you mentioned having downloaded from is the exact same I posted when explaining that you may have downloaded from a different model's page. The P5K-E /Wi-Fi model's correct download page is seen at http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P5K-E&type=map&mapindex=1

You went through the selection process to end up with the update for the wrong board there. With the long list of models seeing a different model with the "P5K" as seen in the image here you have to choose the exact model especially for anything involving the bios on a board. Drivers for onboard video and sound would be a nuisance to remove if the wrong ones while the wrong flash? oops!

I am sure i choose the right spec when i downloaded it, on the top left corner of the download page it had the model spec:

Model: P5K-E/WiFi-AP BIOS History

and the os was : DOS/ALL OS

2008/01/03 date

P.S. the first link you gave went to P5K-E not P5K-E/WIFI-AP

There are two links for each release date. One is for the floppy dos method while the other is for Windows and other OSs. The first link was for showing how not to get confused if you selected the wrong model by mistake in the list shown in the image above.

The first link matches the one you stated you downloaded the update from not the second which is the correct one for the board there. Since one is right above the other you have to verify you click on the exact one for the board you have when using the model selector. You apparently grabbed the wrong one.

I dont see two links for downloads.. after choosing the correct model & os from the top search like the picture you linked me i go to the bios section and there is only one section for download with different countries listed as hosts. here is where i went for the orginal download (0906 version, used flash drive to update it from start up)

The top right coner search bottom resets after a search is made.

Alright i think i know where you went, it should be the same though but i will try the exclusive downlaod for windows xp (it dose not seperate the download if you go to the bios section for some reason)

Well after I went ahead and got this bios and still have the "Exact" same problem (page goes blue with messeges for under two seconds then the computer just restarts) it probebly is something other than the bios.. I wish i could read the error detail logs from windows to see what might be up..

any ideas on what hardwares might be causing a quick crash & reboot? motherboard is damaged perhaps, or power disruptions?

Any programs to test differenct system component's stablity? i am thinking it might be the memory corruption or not compatible with the mobo

using 4 x 1g of this:

I am pretty sure it is the memory @ this point, my total memory shows 3.2g rather than 4g under my system information.. its possible one of the chips is corrupted or damaged..

If you're using Vista, or another x86 based OS, showing 3.2GB of RAM for 4GB in sticks is fairly common.. not sure what to say about your other issue, though.. sorry.

In the future, you should try to edit your last post rather than create another.. not trying to mini-mod here, just that some people have an e-complex and won't reply to those who double/triple/quadruple post.. even in their own threads :)

Good luck,
