ok, so i decided i'd mess with 2 old aptivas i have. they both had faulty parts, but by putting them together, i was able to make a semi-working system. anyway, my question is, when resetting the bios, is that suppose to clear the operating system off the computer or just set the bios setting to default. if its the second answer, then how can i completely wipe my computer of everything?

Hi,

When you reset your BIOS, it means that you are resetting the bios... not your operating system. Your OS stays like it used be. But... what do you mean with erase? After erasing, are you going to but an OS on it? Then, you should format your pc with a CD of XP(vista).
