Black/freezing screen

Hello,
since monday I have problems with my desktop PC. While doing nothing special on it (browsing the net, watching youtube videos), the screen suddenly turned black. Background lightning was still on, the PC was running, but it didn't react at all, there was no sound, so only a reset helped it. This happenened to once every day, then yesterday the error changed, instead of turning black, the sreen froze, sound stopped and only reset helped again, but after two resets the system is freezing already a few minutes after Windows has loaded.
My system is kind of old:
Motherboard: Abilt Il-8
CPU: Pentium D 3 Ghz
3 GB Memory
Videocard: Connect 3D Radeon X550 256 MB
PSU: FSP400-FPN60 (this was bought about a year ago)

After the problem happned on Monday, I cleaned the machine and checked if the fans are running, so I don't think it's an overheating problem.
My guess would be that the videocard is simply too old and it is dying although some people told me it could be the motherboard too. (I really hope it's not that.)

Could anybody tell me the cause of my problem? Have some of you faced such an issue too?

Thank you for your suggestion. Sadly I couldn't borrow a matching video card, but still, there was some development during this weekend. I finally got some POST beeps :D 1 long, 2 short, meaning graphics error. However I read it could be memory too, so I took out all RAM and put them in only one by one, but the computer didn't start independent which stick was put in and keept beeping 1 long, 2 short beeps. I'm goint to buy a Sapphire HD 5450 (I know there are better ones already but it will do for me) this week and I relly hope everything will be ok.
