Black screen after adding extra RAM!

Hi everybody,

I have a Toshiba Satellite C660-10T Laptop and have recently purchased an additional 2GB RAM to upgrade my laptop to 4GB in total. The RAM stick is identical to the original 2GB ram that came installed in the laptop.

I have added the extra ram and when i turn on the laptop the screen remains black however the laptop fans can be heard etc. When i remove the added ram the com starts up fine and shows the windows login on screen. I have also tried both ram sticks on their own in slot 1 and they both work fine, its only when they are both in the connectors that i get the black screen.

Any help asap would be fantastic.

Regards

Mark

Thank you for your reply and apologies for the late response. I have carried out putting the RAM into various slots etc and the results are as follows:

Original ram in slot 1 - Works
Original ram in slot 2 - black screen
New ram in slot 1- works
New ram in slot 2 - black screen

original in slot 1 & new in slot 2 - black screen
new in slot 1 & original in slot 2 - black screen

It sounds like you have a bad memory slot.
Look carefully inside the slot to see if any debris is in it.
Other than that there isn't much you can do without getting it fixed.

It seems there is an issue with the second slot. Is this still under warranty? If so get it rma'd.

I have noticed a small difference in the two ram sticks.

they are both samsung 2GB 1Rx8 PC3-10600S-09-10-ZZZ

Then underneath this it has M471B5773CHS-CH9 1034

The new ram has the same, however instead of the last 4 digits being 1034 its 1044

could someone tell me if this makes a difference?

thanks

I doubt it.
That is most likely manufacture info for like date made.

Since neither will work in slot 2 by themselves it is a slot issue.

it says in the manual that slot A is reserved for a single memory module. Also it states that 1gb,2gb & 4gb memory modules can be installed in the computers two memory slots for a maximum of 8gb. Is this correct?

also could there be a setting that stops the slot B from working as its never been used before so i dont know hot it could be broken :(

No, there wouldn't be a setting to disable it. That machine has a max memory of 4gb not 8gb.

Haven't you ever bought anything at the store and when you take it out of the box, its already broke? It happens...
