Blank screen

I have a Dell dimension 4700 thats about 3 1/2 yrs old. The other day I left it on while I went to work, and I while I was gone the power went out. When I tried to turn my computer on the next day all I got was the inital loading screen and then the screen goes blank except for a blinking cursor. I've tried to get into setup and all that does is give me the same blank screen. I've also tried to get into the boot menu, but when I press the button it tells me I have a keyboard error. I tried a second keyboard with the same results. I'm out of ideas for fixing my computer, does anybody else have any suggestions?
 
OS is XP, right??

i think maybe there could have been something go on with the hard drive...... so maybe a system repair?
 
That doesn't work, I can't get into the boot menu, it keeps telling me I have a keyboard failure. Unless I can get the computer to boot from the disc some other way...

ok.... sounds like the motherboard has gone.....
 
Then it could possibly be the controller on the motherboard like mentioned beforehand. Unfortunately laptops are never worth fixing unless it is something like a keyboard. By the time you pay for parts and labor you will likely spend upwards towards $400+ dollars, and at that point you are better off investing that much money into a new one.

If anything you can try to part it out on ebay and sell the HD, RAM, and screen. Maybe get a little money out of it.
 
i agree if its a desktop its probably the motherboard, since there so complex they go wrong easily. sadly im not the greatest fan of dell, iv had 2 and both have died after just a few years, sorry

Thanks for all your responses, I'm really not too sad as it was getting time to either replace the computer or upgrade it, so now I guess I'll just replace it. I'd also just bought an external hard drive and put my important stuff on that :).

Well if you need help with a new system... just post a thread or post a reply in here and we can give you some help.

if you want to some parts from your old system might still be fine, they might fit into your new system lowering the cost, you could allways use the internal HDD in you new system, and mabe the ram too

Most likely not with a Dell. In my experiences they use non standard sized parts, so you are forced to order them from Dell, which is ungodly expensive.

Correct. Dell parts are usually BTX. Thus, PSUs, motherboards, ect will not work in a standard ATX case...
