Blinking Power Button on Monitor

I've search around the forum to try and find a question similar to mine as to not repeat the question, but I haven't found one that has a clear cut answer.

The situation is that twice now I have left my computer running with my monitor turned off and when I return to power it back on, the screen is dead and the power button is blinking. When I disconnect it from the computer it still shows the "disconnected" message so I know the monitor is working to a certain extent. Also, when I reboot and let the monitor run with a dead screen and blinking power button it eventually starts working again. As of now it's working again.

I'm thinking that maybe the monitor is dying on me. Would I be correct to assume this? The warrenty expired a while back and monitors don't come cheap so I was hoping to get some feedback first. Thank you.

Is it not you computer going in to low power mode by shutting off the video card?, have you tried moving the mouse? This could just be a problem with software and drivers with this computer not properly re-awakening the video card to give an output. If you have another computer try connecting this monitor in question too it and see if the same problem persists. Also going in to the power management settings for your operating system and disable any configurations that cause any part of the computer to power down.

I know that 'computers of old!' used to have a fit when you turned off the monitor for an extended period, but I'm talking pentium2s and older. I always assumed the video card got a different amount of electronic resistance (wrong term, but you get where I'm coming from hopefully) when the screen was off, and somehow that resulted in the video card switching off.

I can't see why you'd want to switch off a screen anyway, sure it uses a bit less electricity than an screen on standby, but its a negligable amount.
