Block Web Pages

Ok, for reasons of my own I want to block some sites so that I cannot look at them without going through a bunch of work, or else just not be able to see them at all (aka permanently blocking them). How can I do this? I saw something about using the DOS command line, but then I tried it out and it didn't work. So how can I go about doing this?
I've also tried a Firefox plug-in, but I'm looking for something more permanent. I use Windows XP.

well i was thinking more hardwire like smoothwall.

also if you have a router i will check if you can block it there

I can mess around with my hardware firewall... it isn't exactly mine to mess around with. Is there just some relatively simple command-line prompt or such?

just use a router, problem solved !! :)
most routers these days can configure access and sites to block

"I can mess around with my hardware firewall..."
Woops, I meant to say can't.
No, not a school computer, I'm using my home computer and the firewall is for my mom's work- she works at a home office. And if it were a school computer, why would I be trying to block a site, my schools does that for me! I just get distracted by websites while doing homework that I just need to block for my own sake, without the use of hardware configuration.

Try running Vista on a 5 year old Dell Dimension 2400... or on my 7-9 year old laptop with a 600mhz processor...
Yay for getting leftover computers!

Um, so I tried going to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and changing the HOST file by adding 127.0.0.2 www.amazon.com under the 127.0.0.1 localhost like people in other places have said to do, but when I save it it saves in a different format (notepad as opposed to just "file") and nother happens with the blocking. How do I save the notepad file as something else? Or is there another way.

You could PeerGuardian2 and put the IP of the websites in the custom block list. It's great, because it blocks a lot of ads too.
