Blue screen from bad memory slot

Hey everyone,

So my 2nd ram slot (second from cpu) is no good apparently, I have an older computer and I upgraded from 1gig to 2 recently and when I made the changes I started to get blue screens of death. It ran fine with 1.5 gigz in there so I ran memtest86 with the 2 gigz and got some errors so I decided to reformat hoping that it just wasn't accepting the new memory for some odd reason unless it had a fresh start with it.

So I reformatted and ran memtest86 again and it came back fine (several tests done on it). So I started running windows setting everything up and started to see little things go wrong at first (didn't run as fast as when I had 1.5gigz in there and odd things happening when I started movies or something on my comp) so I just decided to take out the memory from the slot 2 (after diagnosing it was that slot and not the new memory... or I'm pretty sure at least).I have tried all different combination of the old memory and new memory for diagnosing purposes

Anyways so I took it out and went on with getting everything back up, but now I'm at the point where I have my system all setup the way I like it, however I seem to still be getting blue screens of death when I do certain things (trying to watch a youtube video on the website being an easy way to get one).

So my question is, Do you think it is the 2nd ram slot (of course I know its hard for you to tell, no big deal if you can't answer that one) and second and most important. Is there anyway I can hopefully recover my system without reformatting again. Hoping maybe I can run something to refresh the comp to tell it that the bad memory is out already (its knows its out telling me I have 1.5, but still getting errors). Or maybe refresh the system files if that would help. My exp with this kind of problem is limited and just need some tips. If they don't work I could reformat if I have to *cry*.

I'm running windows xp home editon btw, and the blue screen of death are stuff like "scsiport.sys" error and physical memory dump errors.

Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance. Would appreciate any feed back for this problem.

What is the stop code you are getting on the blue screen? If you aren't sure, you can find out what it was, and see if it is any of the more common issues here:

http://www.computerforum.com/184833-windows-stop-error-guide.html

If it isn't in the list, post the stop code and I can help you with what the code indicates the problem to be.

If you are certain that it is your memory, or your DIMM slot, have you made sure that the settings in the BIOS for your memory are correct? And I don't mean on auto, I mean to the settings (speed, timings and voltages) for your memory, which are usually on a sticker on the stick of memory itself.

Do all sticks work fine on their own in all slots? If that is the case, it is possible, and probable, that your memory isn't matched, meaning they won't work properly together. If the memory is from different manufacturers, has different timings, different speeds and/or different stock voltages, the chances that the memory won't work together is greatly increased

As much info as I can gather

Sorry for the late reply, was out all weekend.

So here is what all I can gather for you, hopefully at least some of this can help. And I can reformat if needed, however not sure that will help. Anyways so here are some of the things that can be causing my errors really. My system was working fine, slow, but good. I upgraded from 1gig to 2gigs of memory (here are the memory stick info: Device Description

I upgraded from my buddies old memory because him and me bought our comps at nearly the same time and he had some extra stuff that he could give me. It is the same brand and model as my other stuff. Saying different "lot" type, but not sure if that makes a difference.

I also bought a "Powercolor ATI Radeon AGP HD 4670 1GB DDR3" video card. Now the cd it came with was garbage so I tried to find drivers off the net and couldn't find any really so I got the ATI Radeon 4600 series drivers for the video card (seem to work fine, but that may be a big no no I'm not sure). Hopefully my problem isn't that dumb.

Now I've been doing all kinds of things to try to get my system back to good working condition. Not sure really what happened, but for some reason I could play youtube videos online after that, and didn't seem to get any errors, so I put the other 512 stick in what I thought was the bad slot. Came on and the system said the 2.00GB was fine (both at start up and when I check on system info on my desktop). So I tried the youtube videos again and they worked fine. So I thought my problem was fixed, however I opened a small video I had, and while that was running I checked a couple of things then again I got a blue screen of death again.

Here are the 3 errors I got since I added the extra 512 of ram (thinking this might be the cause since I got 3 in the last 2 hours or so lol)

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x1000008e (0xc0000005, 0x40549c20, 0xf76f65bc, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini102410-01.dmp.

The one just after posting originally:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x100000d1 (0x000031c0, 0x00000005, 0x00000000, 0xb821f3ac). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini102410-02.dmp.

And the most recent one just for restarting my computer. Apparently my comp doesn't like that:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x100000c5 (0x0fdb85f8, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x8054c039). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini102410-03.dmp.

Not sure what these errors mean, I haven't had a chance to check them out yet, but please feed me info regardless if you know whats wrong or can help in any way. Thanks so much. If you need any more info let me know, trying to get this resolved. I'll take out all the 1 gig if that's what it takes, maybe its my video card I don't know anymore. Just curious that I got 3 errors in about 2 hours or so after adding the 2nd gig.

Not to keep bothering everyone with my probably dull posting, just updating on some info to help out more.

Got about 6 more errors with the 2nd 512 stick in there, so I took that out obviously, more of this stuff:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x1000008e (0xc0000005, 0xb2f8ddf5, 0xa1db1cf4, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini102510-02.dmp.

So now I'm back to 1.5gigz and I'm wondering if I reformat with the 1.5 this time instead of the 2gigz which I had in when I reformatted before maybe that will solve my problems.

Just a thought, I'll wait a while to let someone reply and stop with putting so many addons on this thread (my apologies).

All 3 stop errors are to do with driver errors, that is either incorrect drivers, corrupted drivers, or lack of drivers. However, what you did with your memory would indicate that your memory is the problem, not drivers. But then again, memtest flagged up nothing, which is throwing mixed signals, because that should show for certain if there is a problem. The fact that with all sticks in it is passing, yet the memory only appears to have problems with all DIMM slots populated causes a little confusion. I should point out here nearly all stop errors can be brought up by memory. If your memory has a problem, it will either store incorrect values, or make errors when inputting/outputting data, and either of those can cause a piece of data in the memory to get corrupted, and cause the error to show. We will start out by ruling out drivers though, and if that doesn't fix anything, the memory is just about certainly your problem.

Download CCC + your drivers from here:

https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/10-10_xp32_dd_ccc_enu.exe

When you launch CCC, it will give you the option to uninstall old drivers, and that is what you want to do first. Uninstall them, you will get prompted for a restart, do so, then run the CCC + driver that you just downloaded again, and install it all. You will be prompted for a restart, and do so.

I can't offer you any more advice about your drivers, because I don't know the rest of the full system specs. If you aren't sure what they are because it is a pre-guilt system, then who is the manufacturer, and what is the model?
