Blue screen, lock-up, squealing.

I woke up to the deathly blue screen the other day. I rebooted as it said and it was fine for the day. Next morning it was the same and took a couple of reboots to get into windows. Now, I cant even get past the post. Sometimes I get a black screen, sometimes it starts to boot but never gets to windows and freezes. It would boot from a cd or hard drive on the few occasions it made it far enough to but then freezes up before I can do anything. I started breaking down the system. At one point I had the video card, ram, cpu, and MB hooked up and suddenly got a high pitched sqeal from the cpu area...thinking it was the fan I took it off and tried again...high pitched squeal. Took out the cpu, and got the same squeal from the MB around were the cpu would go. the squeal was a constant sound, until after one boot it just kind off died out and everything including the fans went off. I tried with a different power supply and get the same thing. Now that the squeal is gone, the fans come on, but I get nothing but a black screen...Am i correct at thinkin im lookin at a new MB?

system is a asus p5n32-e sli 680i, q6600, evga 8800gts, 4gb corsair ddr2 ram, anatec case w/ zalman cpu fan (cooling shouldnt be an issue and it wasnt overclocked).

I've repaired a few problems similar to these, and it sounds like your CPU is over heating. You wouldn't happen to be using P4 processor? (3.2ghz)

no, its a 2.4ghz....it had been sitting for about 5 hours right before it made the squeal noise and went dead....and it hadnt even been turned on for 10 seconds. And it made the noise with the cpu taken out of the motherboard.

Was the squealing sound around where you hard drive is located?
It could also be one of your fans making the noise.
And your CPU is in fact a p4? (2.4ghz)
If you MOTHERBOARD is making a squealing noise, there is definitely something wrong with it.
So double check the other hardware to make sure.

He said he's got a Q6600 on his first post mate

Have you checked the motherboard lights while it's squealing? What colours are they? I've got a feeling it's the motherboard, make sure there's no loose collections etc though and try running with just power connected to the motherboard with everything taken out the motherboard.

i would say more like the power supply...buy a power supply tester at newegg.com or your computer store from $10-25.

I have tested it on a known good power supply. And it was sqealing with everyting else taken out expect for the MB and CPU and graphics card. I took out the CPU, turned it on, and it squealed again but quickly died out. The graphics card is good, Ive tried that in another computer and it works just fine so thats rulled out. There was no RAM installed at the time either so thats ruled out, as well as the hard drive. Its either the CPU or the MB. During the squeal, all the fans were not working except for the CPU fan and that was totally limping along at not even half speed. once the squeal quit, i put the CPU back in the MB, turned it on and everything powered up fine, but I got no post or anything on the screen...The whole thing just went black. I took out the MB but there are no cracked, leaking, or damaged capacitors, not burn marks, absolutely nothin looks to be wrong with it. I am gonna keep working on it today so will post up what I find...

Sounds like you have a choke going bad on the board.

Will look like this
