blue screen of death problem
i have a new system with-
-brand new hdd,motherboard
-few months old ram, psu, processor, nvidia 8600 gt
My board is i915 ddr2 and ram is 2 gb , now as my system is new i shouldnt be having any problems but i get random blue screens of death almost everyday
i have a fresh copy of windows xp pro installed.
yesterday i tested i ran memtest 86+ and i got 24 errors after 1 pass of 8 tests , does this means that my ram is at fault for this or there might be some other problem. my specs:

NOTE : i got these bsod's in space of 3 days and they normally happen when the computer has been on for few hours

Looks like you have some driver and memory issues here.

EDIT: Just reread your original post. You said you ran memtest and got errors. YES, you need to replace your ram and most likely the blue screens will go away.

i read somewhere that we can get errors in memtest because of processor or motherboard so according to you what is the probability of that happening

Thats the whole idea behind diagnosing. If memtest comes back with errors then you try known good ram. If it still happens on your board then something else is wrong. But I would say 95 percent of the time, its definately bad ram.

ok so put my ram stick in the other slot and ran memtest and still getting errors so that means most probably faulty ram.
and also i want to share that sometimes when the pc restarts after crashing i cant boot to windows as it restarts everytime and then i have to go to recovery and do chkdsk /r and then only i can start windows again, so is it related to my same old problem or is it something new.

If the machine wants you to run checkdisk that you may have a failing hard drive as well. Replace the ram and see if other issues still happen. Also, what power supply are you using?

but i have a brand new hard drive and my psu is a 450 watt with this printed on it "CIL-ODYSSEY"
I will test my system with a good ram stick for a few days and then i will let u know.
by the way thanx a lot for all the help

1> i was trying to format my pc but i get blue screen during windows installation (using old ram)
2> i got new ram but its not working , my cpu is with 800 mhz fsb,and my last ram was 533 mhz and new one is 667 mhz does this pose a problem

When you say its not working, what exactly do you mean its not working? What exactly happens. And just because you have a brand new hard drive, don't mean anything.

so i have replaced the ram with a new ram and its working fine now when i try to install new windows on my computer i get bsod during the file copying process n also i get a lot of errors during memtest

If you are still getting errors running memtest then either the memory is bad again or something else is wrong. You may have to take the machine in to get it diagnosed properly.

so now after getting new ram amd processor i was still getting bsod ( with no error specified eg.page fault etc) during xp installation so i took my whole machine to a computer shop and to my surprise when he tried to install xp there was no bsod , im puzzled what could be the reason , the only changes were that he i didnt take my keyboard nad power cable to the shop so he used his keyboard n cable so what shud i interpret from this .... can keyboard cause bsod?

I dont think so that you have your BSOD because of your Keyboard. I think you Install your OS with some error. so he re Install your system. thats it?

Looking at the specs of your PC it says 2gb ram but only 1.4 available

Normally i would associate that the 60mb where for onboard graphics but you also say 8600gt GPU

Is your monitor not plugged into the external graphics card?

this data was taken during running of pc so i think that 1.4 available means that this amount of ram is currently free while the rest of d ram is being used by the system n other processes
