BluRay Converting Help

Hey I'm new here and have a quick question. I'd consider myself somewhat tech savvy but for the life of me I can't seem to get this to work. I'm trying to get BluRay movies to either stream to my 360 from my computer via WMC or I've got a 250 gig WD external drive to put them on. Just started getting BluRay movies since they're supposedly a lot better however I'm starting to have my doubts compared to the typical DVD rips that are AVIs. I understand BluRays are MKV files. I understand to play them I need to convert them to AVI or another format (I prefer AVI for some reason (I know it works?)). So I downloaded Hamster Free Video Converter. Followed the simple instructions and got an AVI out. However it is very choppy. Seen the settings were on high quality so I dumbed them down a bit. Still choppy. Dumbed it down even more and still choppy (mind you the last test was on my computer running it in WMP, so this could have affected the play quality?). Should I download a lesser quality BluRay version? The version I downloaded was 1080p. Should I dial it down to 720p? Or should I go about converting it a different way? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Your subject is a country mile outside the rules of the forum and cannot be addressed.

On a technical note, matroska (mkv) is a video container, as is avi, and has nothing to do directly with Blu-Ray. The containers can hold videos of various codecs such as xvid, divx, indeo, h264, mp4 etc.
