Boosting A 802.11 Wireless Network?

Recently just purchased a notebook w/ built in 802.11 wireless. The place we're staying provides the internet w/ the rent. (Naturally, the signal sucks!)

What are the odds that a USB adapter would enhance the signal when the router is roughly 250-300 feet away at the management office?

I mean we get the net, but I'm getting real tired of pissing everyone off on Full-Tilt Poker, and it takes like 30 minutes to get a 5min You-tube video, if it play's at all.

Linksys RangePlus Wireless Network USB Adapter WUSB100 Network adapter - Hi-Speed USB is like $60-$70, but I've never used one, so if anybody can help before I waste time/money that'd be awesome!

If anyone knows a product that works, and costs less? -we're all ears!

I would get a USB adapter that has an external antenna, which may be enough to gain an extra bar which could be the difference between night and day. I would not buy it from Best Buy however, I would check out www.newegg.com, you can get several under $30.

Maybe get everyone in the complex to chip in on another or a better wireless router. If thats at all possible.

Thanks... I thought about buying my own router to link up with the office, but I highly doubt they'll allow me to have their ISP and identity info. So the USB Adapter will be the first attempt, and hopefully solve the problem. We really don't associate with many of our neighbors here, so getting them to do anything... would be a stretch!

Ultimately we just want to be able to watch movies online, and it gets tiresome waiting 6-8 hrs to download a 80 minute video feed.

Thanks for the info

Are you sure though that the problem is the wireless signal and not that the main office either has a slow internet connection, or that there are simply way too many people on it at once? Usually having at least 2 bars would give you faster speeds then what normal cable/DSL is.

Tell them that you aren't paying for the wireless and get your self either DSL or Cable internet.
