Computer is 5-yr old custom built with Abit MB & 3.0 ghz Intel Processor. Was working fine with old Nvidia TI-4400(AGP8x) Video card and old CRT monitor. Bought new LCD monitor and Nvidia GeForce 6200 (AGP8x). With the new card installed, box starts to boot then gives "Boot disk error, insert system disk then press enter". If I go into repair utility, then exit at command prompt it will finish booting and run great. Alternatively, if I go into the BIOS setup utility then exit out, it will finish booting and run great. Once fully booted up, I can execute a "Restart" and it will do so normally. but if I execute a complete shut-down, then cold-boot, the boot disk error shows up again. I tried disconnecting the floppy drive and extra fans just in case it was short on power (350 watts). If I re-install the old TI-4400 card, everything goes back to normal, and boots up fine. A "Geek Squad" tech at Best Buy checked it out, but was totally mystified. Any ideas out there?

So if you boot to a CD then tell it to continue booting to the HD it loads correctly? Are you sure the boot order is correct? No cables were rearranged or anything while inside the computer?
Something else, most computers have a boot menu (usually something like F12 during POST). Try that and select your (primary) hard drive. I suppose this would just be another way to test if it's the boot order or not.

Thanks for your reply. I can boot with the CD, then remove it from the drive, and it will still do a Restart. Won't do a cold boot. The tech at Best Buy thought it might be the boot order in the BIOS setup, but he said it was set properly. He did notice that it would boot up after entering BIOS setup then exit out with no changes. Except for the video card, nothing was disturbed. He also unplugged things like the floppy drive and cooling fans (2 of 3) to see if it might be a power shortage. Same results. Everything has since been re-connected. Still boots normally with old TI-4400 video card.

Hmm.. I'd be curious how the motherboard would accept other video cards; similar 6200's of the same or even different brands. Have you tried much with the new GPU once it gets to Windows, confirming it works correctly and doesn't give you other errors? And power, I find it rather doubtful, but have you tried another power supply? I know the card's a fairly low-power one, but with the computer's age it might be worth checking out if possible...

I was hoping to get something better than the 6200, but Best Buy doesn't stock AGP cards, and the only other place I could go was a computer store that I have never liked much. (I have to do this on Saturdays only). The 6200 was the only AGP Nvidia they had (I've had bad experiences with ATI doing CAD.) I don't have another PS or GPU but another one would be at least $50 if not more. Not wanting to throw parts (and &&) at it without knowing what the problem is. The place I bought the 6200 is no help at all. (Once it's out the door, it's your problem) First & last purchase there.
Once I had this thing booted up, I fired up UT2004 with no anomalies noted. Same result with SolidWorks and Opera browser visiting various sites. No anomalies noted anywhere. If I can't get this figured out, I'll just have to spring for a new computer. Might be a challenge to do that on a Saturday. I've always wondered what would happen if used my 12 guage on this old hunk-a-junk.
