Boot Linux on USB

im a long time Xp user.
i am yet to explore other OS's, mainly because i enjoy my familiarity with XP
can i boot a version of Linux from my USB while already running XP. sort of like a parallel? [i would also need to obtain it aswell]
while keeping within my skill level.
which isn't overly restricted
 
Are you talking about a usb drive or a external HDD? Either way as long as they have the amount of free space that is required I don't see why not.
 
Just download it off the linux site
depending on you needs
DSL (50MB Small OS)
Ubuntu Basic OS

its in ISO....
how can i execute this from a USB?

Which distro are you trying to get? I recommend Ubuntu but I know when I did mine I saved the ISO file to roxio (my cd/dvd burning software) and when it's done downloading it will open then burn it. Finally after it is done re insert the disc and follow the instruction.
 
well i edited my last post stating i have DSL, i have version 4.4.10
and the main reason for my question is how can i boot it from a USB
should i be using a virtual drive?
or is there an easier way??
 
Why would DSL matter, you still download the same. If I may ask why won't you just dual boot? Linux doesn't take up hardly any room at all.
 
firstly because i plan to boot from school and the computer will already turned on.
i preferable don't want to run any EXE. files [because they are blocked]
the guy B4 asked what distribution i have and i answered his question???
 
I was just checking cause that would have been illegal since there are secuity features (that linux whould be able to go around) that the states rquire's the schools to have. In order to run it ontop of a windows OS your right you will need virtual box. But what you can do for your computer at home would be to run the linux installer, in there you can select where you want to install it on then select the device. Then when you boot up go to your boot up menu and boot linux directly. If your inserting the disc and nothing is happening the you need to download daemon tools ( the lite version is free) and run the iso image in that.
