boot sector message removal

hello all,

my son has recently been caught by me, writing viruses on my old 98 laptop. He used a program called "virus wizard" found at:

http://www.geocities.com/randy027dsz36/

I promply uninstalled it and restarted my computer and now, I get a message saying "this partition is being used for virus testing, controled by the virus wizard". I have made sure all traces of the program are removed but, the message keeps coming up. Is there a way to remove it without reformating the HD or reinstalling the OS? I don't have the windows disk so I can't reinstall it. Is there any easy way to remove the message? any help would be greatly appriciated!

When abouts does the message appear? Before the computer boots to the Windows loading screen, or after Windows starts?

first off the computer is a toshiba so it will popup the toshiba logo, then it will ask for the bios password, then it will pop up the message! after that, it will stop until you press the ESC key and it will boot windows normally.

It sounds like you will need to rewrite the master boot record of the disk, though I'm not sure about the risks involved if you don't have the windows disk. This article explains a little about it, and how to do it using FDisk from DOS.

Make sure you have any crucial data backed up, as I can't guarantee what effect the rewriting the MBR will have on the "virus" (should be alright), and then format a floppy disk as an MS-DOS boot disk. Use the command "fdisk /mbr" and hopefully that will overright the message.

Edit: Just realised you're on Win98. There should be a start menu option to restart in MS-DOS mode (I think).

are there any ways to access the boot sector from windows without going into DOS. Like I said, I am a dinosaur to computers and would go the easier path.
