Boot sector question

Is it a seperate entity or is it a small part of the partition? the reason I ask is this HD will not work as a master but it seems to work fine as a slave.

Maybe I phrased that wrong, is the boot sector a different "physical" drive than the rest of the HD or is it just a section of data on the HD called a boot sector

It is the first sector of a partition. It contains such things as the master file table which has information on all the files and folders on that partition.

So is it possible the "first sector" of a partition (HDD) can be bad without the whole HDD being bad? I suppose anything is possible!
