Boot up speed... too slow

I have an AMD XP 3200+ in my computer with 1GB DDR, and I was recently at my parents in law where I noticed that their computer, a 1.8 GHZ machine with 256mb SD-RAM booted up way quicker than mine.

From button press to the user login screen theirs seemed twice as fast as mine, which I find ridiculous.

We are both running XP pro, I would assume my HDD to be faster as its newer. I have turned off all the usual things like memory tests and auto detections, as well as ensuring HDD is the primary boot etc, but still its slower!

One thing that does seem to slow it is that the first thing it shows on powering is all the details about my graphics card... it shows this for a couple of seconds before moving on, any way of stopping this??

I don't know of any other ways to speed up this part of the boot process, any suggestions?

nope no viruses or spyware.

There are some stupid parts on the boot (well stupid and pointless if you aren't using them) like when it says 'press ctrl + s for raid support'. If it didn't pause on stuff like that it would be wuicker. I haven't seen options to switch this off.

There are usually lots of little applications that start up with the PC, these are added by software you install and if you have lots of applications installed it can take a while to get them all up. You can edit which come on automatically on boot-up by using the 'MSConfig' function in Windows, but I have Spybot S&D installed and use the 'Startup' tool in the advanced menus to control these utility programs. I have about two thirds of them switched off (but make a shortcut icon to them on the desktop incase I want to enable, say, Bluetooth communications), and this helps.
Also, things like antivirus and software firewalls make a difference.

Yes it could be that, but also sounds like you should reformat your hdd, windows boots up slower as you have it for longer. Reformatting will get rid of any viruses you have, just make sure to back up your data first.
 
Two things I would suggest first off.

Defragment your hard drive [My comptuer > Right click on drive > propertys . tools, defrag]

Then click on start, then run, then msconfig, and take off all those startup programs and non microsoft services :)
