Booting error, please assist!

Hey guys, I just installed a WD Raptor drive with windows xp x64 and the OS. I have a pentium 4 640 3.2 Ghz processor and it ran fine until this morning when I restarted the computer.

I got a boot failure screen saying "replease restart and select the proper boot device or insert bootable media, and press any key to continue" and I can no long boot off the raptor drive. I disconnected all the other drives and tried again and got the same message.

Anyone ecountered this problem before?

diagnostics say everything is fine

i tried to boot with the x64 CD and repair the drive and there wasn't a repair option.

also, the drive path kept changing...originally when it was working it was H drive, then when i tried to repair, it was called E, and after another reboot it was called C, very strange phenomenon.

Any other clues?

Make sure the drive is set to master.

they are all SATA and there is no master/slave setting on the harddrive themselves.

also it was working fine with the default jumper settings till i restarted

Have you changed any settins in your BIOS lately or reset it by chance?

Go into your BIOS and see if it sees your hard drive in there.

Thats really odd then. Check to see if your Hard drive is the first boot device. it it is, maybe try and reinstall windows.

Yuep, reinstall windows. You dont have to reformat of anything, just install windows but leave the other files intact. I believe there are 4 options
Format using NTSF
Format using NTSF(quick)
Format using Fat32
Resintall windows but leave other files intact.

If you need further clarification, or how to install windows, let me know.

That is correct. It just reinstalls system files, so you wont notice any difference.

I also read on another forum that you can just copy the NTLDR file from the installation CD into the root folder of the boot drive, should I give that a shot frist before trying to reinstall windows?

If you want. I have never done that before, so i wouldnt know how.
