Booting with PCI-E Card, Not enough power?

Hey guys,

Well I have been troubleshooting my PCI-Express x16 slot because I am getting no signal whatsoever out of it. Before I go and buy a new motherboard, I have a few questions to make sure it is my slot. I have tried 2 video cards, both were brand new in the slot, neither show a sign.

However, I just heard this the other day when I troubleshooted it, the computer boots fine, with the onboard video, this is going to sound funny, but you know when a computer starts/the fans start it usually goes at a steady pace, like vrmmmmmmmmmmm, then it stays at the mmmmm sound? Well It does that when no video card in. When I had my video card in the slot, it sounded like it had trouble booting, it went like this vrmmmmmmrvvvrmmmmmmrvmmmmvrmmmmm, like its trying but cant start up fully until it finally boots. Basically it sounds like its not getting enough power to it, but it probably is. I have a 500w power supply, and not many fans being used, so I think its strong enough, it just doesnt sound like its not quite powerful enough? However, when i booted it without the panel on, I could clearly see that the fan is spinning on the graphics card.

First make sure the PCI/PCI-E bios setting to PCI-E and make sure the onboard is disabled. Refer to the user's manual for the board on this. With the onboard video enabled that will stamp out the display when a separate card is installed on many boards.
 
I spoke with ASUS' technical department, and we changed all of that, however there is no real way for me to disable the onboard video in bios, other than changing the frame buffer size to 0mhz, and if I do that, then they said something about me having to do something with CMOS - something like that - and it won't boot up?

If you went through all that with their support staff and still aren't getting anywhere that kind of brings you back to the rma situation all over again. Being a new board it's an annoyance and shipping charges as well as time there.

I ran into that on the recent build here where the board simply quit after 3 days. Join the club! That would be the best option would be seeing it returned since a 500w supply is adequate for simply running most builds to start with. What model is the board there?
 
I'm running the M2N-E model at the moment which is seeing great results with the replacement board so far. One last thought would be seeing if the latest bios revision is already on there.

Any expansion card will see some additional power draw from a supply. But the PCI-E slot or some problem on the board itself is likely. While bad caps are generally the main defects seen on new boards you can go with either a replacement of the same model or select another since you already went through their live tech support.
