Both Drives Won't Eject

Except for the DVD/CD burner after I hit the eject button numerous times. But the read drive, it won't eject period. It wants to, but wont. Are my drives bad, bad motherboard, or malicious software??

If it sounds like its trying to, it probably broke a little belt right inside the drive door that pulls it in and out. I have fixed them with small rubber bands:P. Never could find the belts anywhere.

I can get em to open with the paperclip inserted into the hole, but they immediately close again. I go to My Computer, and click on the drive. They open after a few seconds, but close again. So is it bad drives or is it the flippin motherboard??

Turn computer off, unhook the ide cable, turn computer back on, press the eject button and see if it opens and closes like it should.

Ok, it's different every time. Sometimes they open after a few tries, the next time they won't. I tried another drive w/ just power, and it opened like it should. IDK, it's really ticking me off. Both the read and write drives play a cd just fine, it's just they won't open half the time when you push eject.

If you haven't already, try disconnecting the drives as mentioned above and see if they operate normally. If so, it could be motherboard or software related. If not, the drives may be bad.

If they did seem fine, try with the drives connected but without booting to Windows (say go to the BIOS). If they still seem to function, it's probably some software hogging them. If not, again, probably hardware/motherboard related.

Also, you didn't mention what the machine was. Problems like this are fairly common with older IDE based machines since the drives can both be on one cable/one channel.

How old are these drives?

I have had a few of these issues myself with older drives and replacing them was the solution.

Is there anything sticky on the drive door by chance? (soft drink, etc.....)
