bottle necking problem on gt

i had an 1300pro ati card in my computer and it played games extremely well for its age.. i would play cod4 at at least 25 fps and gears at around the same maybe a bit less... now i got an 8800gt and cod4 jumps more than the girls on bay watch. i have a 3ghz p4 ( to hold me over till i can get the 9450 or 9550) and i have overclocked it to 3.5 and it seems to be playing games worse than b4. is this a bottle necking problem or is it something else?

other info:
mobo: asus maximus formula
cpu: cedar mill (65nm) pentium 4, 3ghz stock
ram: 4 gigs of gskill 1000mhz
os: vista ultimate 64bit

Turn down your settings? :)
Try turning down particles or explosions...or something of the sort
Anything that might cause the cpu to struggle...
Just paly around with the settings...I usually find that it is just one setting that will make my pc slow down...

well then... i was wondering if there was anyway to decrease the multiplyer in the cpu inorder to increase the fsb and possably allow it to feed the processor a bit faster so i can get some good frame rates, tell me if my thinking is off.

i know that i have a locked multiplyer, but i heard that some of them you can decreast them by 1 or 2 so you can increase the fsb.

well i fixed the problem, i had to oc to 4ghz though and thats not exactly ideal. another ideas on how to fix this w/o such a high cpu clock

Buy a new CPU? Your CPU is bottlenecking your system and there's nothing you can do besides OCing and buying a new one.

It may just be me but something doesnt seem right, if you are playing the exact same game with the same setup but a better GPU, the how could the game be playing worse fps then prior?

(this is all under the assumption that you kept the graphic settings similar)

that didnt sound right to me either. but i oced an now i can play gears of war and cod4 at 30+fps. i rmaed my first gt because it would artifact, but i ran ati tool with this one for an hour and it was just fine. im sure its a bottle necking problem some how, and i WANT a new cpu but the 45 quads are not out yet!!!

well it started doing it again. i can at max get 6fps in 3dmk06 and thats with the cpu overclocked and stock speeds.
any ideas?

Reset your bios.. My 8800gt did that to me once after I messed around with overclocking and such. Ran like crap. I completely reset my bios to defaults and it worked fine. I must have hit some setting somewhere that held back the card.

Also, make sure the PCI-E slot your running it in is a PCI-E x16 and not an x4 or x8 or something. And then make sure that you have the 6 pin power connector plugged into the card and make sure the clock speeds on the card itself are at least stock and not downclocked.

iv done all of that... although i always turn off cpu and pcie spread spectrum (what ever that does) because i saw a screen shot of someone who knew what they were doing and they had both of those disabled. the thing i dont get is why it worked perfectly at 4 but now it runs like crap again, INTEL NEEDS TO BRING THEIR 45NMS OUT NOW!!!
and my slot is running at a full 16x.
