Bottleneck?

I have a Celeron 360 (3,46 GHz) and 1,5 GB ram. I want to buy a new videocard. Will I get a big bottleneck by combining a Celeron 360 and a Radeon HD3850?

I know, Celerons are bad, but this one is fast, for a Celeron.

And before you ask, yeah I wanna be a gamer. And I'm not going to buy a new PC. I can hardly afford a high end videocard, so I'm not going to buy something even more expensive.
 
Yes it will, although you should still be able to get a fair amount of performance in some games.
 
Will it be just a bottleneck (I guess that's very hard to avoid with any CPU) or will it be a really big one?
 
It's really hard to say as theres no real way for us to determine what it would be, in all depends on the game really.
 
its not like the bottleneck will slow down performance past that of the actual bottleneck, your processor should still play games on high settings with some FPS, but dont expect anything in the hundreds.
 
i got a E6400, its a 2.13Ghz Core 2 Duo with 2mb L2 Cache, will this bottleneck my system is i get, say a 9800GX2 or a 9800GTX????

How many frames will i lose....

If it does, which is game dependent as mentioned above, it won't be near as noticeable as OP's single core Celeron would be. Games that utilize the CPU more than normal, RTS' for example, will show greater symptoms.

i wouldn't worry much. It's hard to tell you're being bottlenecked in the first place, if teh frames are good, why worry? You could always OC if things get hairy. :D

wont bottleneck half as much as you would think. your chip has a nice stepping and with the right cooling you could get it up to 3.0 if not 3.2 ghz.

Also i tried OCing and i got it to 2.66Ghz and my hard drives rearanged and got corrupt (could be due to oc cause it happened straight after the OC attempt, or just luck)

You mean this in a bad way? L2 cache influences the performance of redundant tasks such as gaming, but little at that. It's not a spec to be fretted over, IMO

Did you ensure a locked PCI bus? Overclocking can innately raise this bus, and doing so has been known to cause problems with the HDD's/controllers.

That's good, so do I. ;) L2 can never be changed, unlike clock speed, so it's definitely something to take into consideration, but It's just not the most important of specs. It'll increase performance, but at it's own pace, which is more of a power walk.
