Bottlenecking - What exactly is it?

I never quite understood what exactly bottle necking was (Well, i know that it's one piece of hardware holding back all the others), but how do you go about preventing bottlenecking? What are the usual pieces of hardware that cause PC's to bottleneck? I checked online but i can't really find a site that's answering what i'm asking. (I'm sorry if what i just asked is hard to understand, lol.)

Bottlenecking is what you said... one piece of hardware holding the rest back. For instance if you have a processor thats lets say dual core 2.8ghz but you only have 512mb of ram... the processor will never get tested because the computer will hit the maximum that the ram can handle well before the amount the processor could take. And the other way around too... if you have a 1.5ghz processor but 4gigs of ram it doesn't matter because you'll never be using all that ram because the processor will max out... does that make sense? So basically the way you prevent it is having all your hardware be at the same tier (if you will). If you have one of the best processors out there... have the right amount and quality ram to compliment it. If you have a POS processor, don't go spend 200 bucks on ram.

So in order to prevent bottlenecking, what do you do? Does it go by the mhz of the Proc / RAM? IE 2GB PC6400 alongside a E6750? (i ask of those because someone helped me out in a previous thread and i just want to double check to make sure i won't be bottlenecking anything) And another thing also, Does the GPU cause any bottlenecking?

I plan on getting this here
build2lk0.jpg
+ a 8800GTS 320MB (Possibly 640, still undecided really), Would that cause any bottlenecking? Thank you for your help, i really appreciate it, and thanks for any other replies i get also.

That system should run fine with either a 320 or 640 880gts... any bottlenecking there would be virtually unnoticeable.

Well, my old PSU in my current computer that im using now died, and i replaced it with a Rosewill 550W Turbo, as i figured it would be a nice budget PSU for my next build, But i was later informed that i shouldn't risk running my new build with this PSU, so im going to be returning this PSU to newegg and getting the Corsair 520W PSU, The only actual thing i have right now that i will be using in my build is the Case, which is a NZXT Apollo case, decent little case for pretty cheap money, Everything else that ill be using is still up in the air though. Got any reccomendations for Drives? I've been told the Corsair 520W would be a very reliable PSU for my build, so i'm pretty sure ill be getting that.

Sweet case I like how it looks. I have the corsair 520 and its a beaut... runs my system with no problem. That Rosewill isn't a bad PSU I just wouldn't push it to the limits you know, then it will become unstable. For hard drives I love my Western Digitals with 16mb cache... I have about 6 of them throughout my house and they all work really well. As for optical drive I like the Samsung 20x dvd burner with a SATA interface. If you gave me a budget and what you plan on using your machine for I could suggested some parts more accurately... but hey half the fun of building is looking around at all the options.

As of right now, my budget is kinda weird, Due to me ordering in increments, (every paycheck i order a new piece, haha.) As far as budget, lets just say i don't really have one. (I don't want anything too insane though, IE $400 Memory and a $300 DVD burner.) I currently have a DVD burner in this PC, and i think i might just take it out and reuse it. It's a DVD R/RW, not sure what speed, think it's only 8x but i don't burn dvd's anyway. Definately make some suggestions though, whatever you think would be good for me. Thank you

Also, how would the 520W Corsair PSU be for Overclocking? I want to try and get into a litle bit of that when my new rig, but don't really want to push anything to the extreme, you know?

Thats what I plan on doing with my rig... pushing it a little but nothing too hard. As for those prices... you can get a SATA DVD Burner at 20x for like 30 bucks, you could almost get a blu-ray burner at that budget. Same with the memory you can get two good sticks of RAM (2x1GB) for 100 bucks like you posted above. So you could put that other money towards a really nice processor and mobo or video card.

Above you have CPU, MOBO and RAM for $450
500gb hard drive - $110 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136073
SATA DVD x20 Burner - $35 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151153
8800GTS Video Card - $275 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130082
So thats less than $900 for everything you don't already have (Case and PSU). Are you looking for like top of the line performance for everything?

If you wanted to spend more you could up your video card to the 640mb and the processor to a quad core or an e6850... could always spend more money lol thats why budget is key

Haha, Yeah, well i'm pretty much set on the CPU, Memory and Mobo so far, i think for now im just going to go with the 320 MB version and later on upgrade to the 9800 series next year. Concidering the PC i have now, anything is really a good upgrade.

Right now i have a 64 bit athlon 3500+, 1GB crap ram, and an x850 pro AGP card. In regards to a blu-ray burner, i doubt i'd ever even kinda use that, concidering i won't be getting a bluray player for a few years, haha. thanks for the help though. :]
