Bringing a Compaq CQ5210f back to life with AMD r9 270x gpu

I was given a Compaq CQ5210F desktop for free and am trying to get it to run an AMD R9 270x graphics card so I can hook it up to my TV and use it in the den for games, movies etc.
I have installed an EVGA 500w PSU which is what the R9 gpu requires.
I also updated to Win 10.

All is running smooth with the PC now after doing all the updates.
I have tried 2 different R9 270x cards, installed the drivers but the drivers are not seeing that the card is installed.
I downloaded the drivers straight from the AMD site 2 or 3 times, removed and reinstalled the gpu and still no luck..
It cannot be found in device manager either.

Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?Could this be a compatability issue since the PC is an 09 model and the graphics cards are 2014 models?
I am not super tech savvy and haven't owned a desktop in years.Seems that this is not as simple as I thought it would be.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Please tell me you have the video cable from the monitor to the computer hooked up to the 270 and not the onboard connection? If you go into device manager under display adapters what does it say?

I don't currently have the R9 hooked up to a monitor or tv.The monitor that came with it is an old HP VS17 with serial only and I have that plugged into the onboard connection for running all the updates etc..I did plug in an hdmi cable to the r9 as a dummy since it is currently set up in another room since I had to put it all together etc.
Device manager doesn't see the R9 but it is powered on,fans running etc.

Should I go ahead and move it and hook it up to the TV and take the onboard card out of the equation?
I wasn't sure if it would work since the drivers are not finding the R9.

Windows won't see the R9 because you are hooked up to the onboard video. Also check the bios to see if there is an option for what video to display(onboard or pcie). On some models there is an option, others not. Usually when you add in a dedicated video card it over rules the onboard so you would need to hook up a monitor to the video card.

That makes sense.I am so behind in the PC tech these days it sad.
Thank you for your help.I will do as you advise and report back once I get everything set back up..
