broadband and p2p software

hi there, i was just wondering can anyone help me with this problem i have or is anyone else currnetly having the same problem.

since using broadband internet and p2p software (ares & bit.torrent) i have encountered problems when shutting down my laptop at the end of each session.

the problem being when i have been running these file sharing programs for more than 20-30 minutes my laptop wont shut down properly. i close internet explorer down as usuall as well as any other programs i have running. then i go to close down my internet connection and my screen freezes and i have to use ctrl-alt-delete and then shut it down from there.

the problem dosent really begin until the next time i log on my computer and find out my modem is down and i have to unistall the broken connection and re-install the full software/drivers and modem all over again. this is happening every other night, i have contacted BT but they tell me simply to make sure all uploads & downloads are finished on my p2p software, which i have done to no avail. i then got in touch with Bt and then basically told me to stop using p2p software which i use to quite often and i am not willing to do at the moment.

i am thinking about getting aol broadband, but does anyone else know if there is a solution to this problem ?

That's a pretty bad problem and I don't know what would solve it. A clean reinstall/format would probably do the trick but thats definitely not your first avenue, i figure i'll let others suggest those ;)
BUT
Switching ISP will do nothing and British Telecom don't really know much about PC technical issues outside of internet related, so contacting them further would be little use.

i then got in touch with Bt and then basically told me to stop using p2p software

LOL their ulterior motives shine through there

#1 Uninstall all P2P apps..
#2 Virus Check
#3 Adware check (www.lavasoft.com)
#4 IF top advice doesnt help, restore comp to previous date.. ( System Restore in System Tools)
#5 If 4 doesnt work, go to your network connections, uninstall all you have in it, and install again..

If all else fails, reformat....

i still don't think the problem is with my computer, more my ISP. i have has this problem ever since i got BT broadband. i had the problem initially with my desktop and now with my new laptop. so i don't think re-formatting will help. i have scanned ares and it is spyware free, and obviously bit torrent is too. i think my next step will be to try either aol or tiscali internet. i have a new modem/router on order and maybe that will solve the problem, who know's ?

well anyways thanks to everyone who posted.

lol, i dont think your ISP has anything to do with how your computer shuts down. In all likelyhood its a problem with your modem.

But in the end its your choice... I would recommend AOL over Tiscali (cos i use AOL)

yeah i get what your saying, but my ISP provided my curent modem (that was more the point i was trying to make), and there is also many faults when re-installing the software. who knows maybe it just needs configured better, but as i stated bt are not really very good on the technical side of things.

i am getting a new modem/router either netgear or linksys. hopefully this will solve the problem. i need a new router anyways so nothing will be lost if it persists.
