Broadband vs Gigabit Router

I have been looking through articles and comparisons throughout the internet and think I am making a good upgrade, but maybe some of you's could provide me with a thumb's up or down.

I currently have 2 broadband routers (DIR-601 and DIR-615) setup in a LAN. One has the DHCP and wifi disabled and is acting a switch only.

I stream media and transfer data constantly (locally) and am disappointed with the transfer speeds and lag (lag during streaming), should mention all devices(pc's and consoles) are hardwired.

I went to Bestbuy for fun and ended up bringing home 2 DIR-636L's. One to use in connection with my modem and the other to be set-up to act a switch. The reason I didn't buy a gigabit switch is because the router was $10 cheaper.

So I have a few to decide a couple things,
will I get better transfer speeds (locally), less lag when streaming(locally from my server). Will there be any bottlenecking while using one of the routers as a switch?

Forgot to mention I bought each router for $30 on sale, the next gigabit router was $80..
Thanks for any help!

For anyone interested in the results I had, they were quite positive!

Before I removed the 2 broadband routers I did a data transfer test, one pc to the other through both routers.

One file - 700 MB took 1:05 minutes @ 10-11 MB/s
Three files - 2.03 GB took 3:15 minutes @ 10-11 MB/s

After setting up the 2 gigabit routers in the same configuration, I ran the same test with the same files.

One file - 700 MB took :08 seconds @ 100-120 MB/s
Three files - 2.03 GB took :22 seconds @ 100-120 MB/s

I am quite pleased with the results and happy so far with the performance of the routers!

See ya...

Bad is a bit of a vague word, I downloaded fine, gamed online fine, I was streaming and transferring data fine, It was just slow and laggy if the LAN was busy with multiple transfers occurring.

What could have been wrong with the routers (DIR-615 or DIR-601) to cause slow data transfer speeds if they seemed to be functioning well??

Thanks!

Could have been excessive heat while transferring. How old were the other routers? Did you try updating the firmware?

The firmwares were up to date, and the routers around 5-6 years old,

These DIR-636L's were released in Sring 2012, is the speeds I got normal for a LAN? 100-120MB/s data transfers??

Thanks!

Interesting. Did some research and found out that data transfer speeds and actual download speed are measured the same. For instance, you have a 100mb connection your transfer speed will be around 12.5 mb/s. And if you have a 100mb internet connection from your internet provider than your max download speed will be around 12.5 mb/s. So in fact nothing was wrong with your old routers. Your new router are 1000mb connection so in theory your max transfer rate will 125mb/s which is right around what you are getting. But actual speeds depends on other things such as speed/technology of hard drives being used.

Yup those are the normal speeds for a gigabit lan. 1 byte(B) = 8 bits(b) so 1000 mb/s = 125 MB/s but you'll never reach 125 MB/s so what you're getting is great.

Thanks guys for the confirmation on the speed results!

I was losing connection while streaming since i installed the new routers, but i updated the firmware from 1.02 to 1.04, hopefully that takes care of it.

Thanks!
