I've been using a pc for a while now, and have used ntl cable broadband for the past year. I've recently bought a laptop and now wish to have the ability to have wireless internet. I cant be bothered ringing them and asking for wirless internet just in case i switch back to a pc and want to change back. Are there any gadgets out their that i can plug my ethernet cable broadband into and turn it into a wirless connection????? any help would be much appreciated!:)

how would u install wireless into your laptop... because my friend has just purchased a laptop and he wants to have access to the internet on there but neither of us know how to configure the settings to allow it to accept incoming connections... any suggestions?

im pretty sure you would only need a wi-fi card to install the wireless connection

yep. most newer ones come with built in wireless. but for some you have to purchare a pcmcia one.

when you get a router, make sure it is compatible with your wireless card(i.e. 802.11g router and 802.11g card.)

where would i purchase a wi-fi card? would circuit city carry them?

Circuit City does carry them, along with stores like Staples, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, abnd many other stores. Just make sure that when you buy it you get the one for a laptop, not a desktop.

ok thanx for the pic... now i kno exactly what im lookin for

im gonna e-mail that to my friend and tell him about it

try newegg.com

as far as the wireless router try netgear. When you configure the router do it in two phases. the first make sure all your devices are connecting to the net, then the second phase set security, like wep , chnge the SSID , change the router logon password from default.

What kind of laptop do you have? Chances are if it's new, that it will have integrated wireless capabilities and you won't need to buy anything accept for the wireless router.

I prefer D-Link, but there are many brands to choose from. All you have to do is purchase the wireless router, and it should have a step by step guide on how to connect it to your existing connection. You set up the settings on your router, then on your laptop, and it should work fine from there.

Right now, Wireless-G is the best available to consumers like us i believe. You can get features like "extended network" or w/e that boosts your signal, but it's all Wireless-G. wireless B isn't as "fast" but if it's just one computer i doubt you will notice a difference.

o0o it's definitely not a new laptop... it's got windows 98 on it

it's a Dell laptop but i dont kno exactly how old it is. definitely doesn't look like a recent model

i'll try and find out
