Browser problem--need help!

Hi. I tried searching for an answer to this and couldn't find one. I run I.E. 6 on a PC Compaq Presario Notebook and recently noticed a problem beginning. When I start my computer, it takes forever to start (and shut down) and when I click on my explorer icon to open my browser, the page opens (and closes) in a top-to-bottom slow motion and fragmented pattern. Once it is open, I can transition from page to page without too much problem. I have gone through and done all of the computer clean-ups, defraged the system a couple of times, did a 5 step check disk, restored the registry using the last known best restore point or whatever that thing says when you start up in F8 mode. I have gotten rid of all programs that hog space and have just the bare minimum. Any idea of why may cause this or if there is a patch I need to deal with it? Any help would be appreciated. If you need more information, I can provide that, too.

is it a fresh install or new computer? .. what kind of video card do you have? when you say "top to bottom slow motion and fragmented patter".. do you mean row by row from left to right/right to left?.. that can be caused by a video card driver not being installed.. as for loading.. do you have any startup programs running? any scanner that scans your computer upon startup/shutdown for security purposes?

this only happens with internet explorer? if it does, maybe try a different browser like firefox and see if it still happens.
