Browser Takeover Issue.

Not too long ago, I was saddled with a browser issue that I don't presently know how to defeat. My attached file shows the unwanted browser screen that I am presented with whenever I connect to the web. It is either that 'Bing' or 'Babylon' mess - and this. I have Firefox installed, and had set Yahoo as my default home page. But what keeps surfacing is this 'Searchus.com'. I have (many times) re-attempted to set up Yahoo as my default homepage, but each time I close out and return to the internet I find myself back to where I didn't want to be.

I have NO idea how this takeover happened, and don't know if it is something that is now a part of Yahoo, itself. If not, I hope that someone could tell me how to successfully defeat it.

Advanced thanks.

Well, it certainly isn't a 'Yahoo' thing.

I went in to Yahoo, and bookmarked the location. I can now get to where I really want to be by calling up the referenced bookmarked page. It's just that whenever I navigate to another site - from Yahoo - and hot the 'Home' button, I am taken right to that 'Searchus.com page. This necessitates yet another press of the respective bookmarked button in order to get back to Yahoo.

Start by doing the following.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com. If you are still having issues running rkill then try downloading these renamed versions of the same program.

EXPLORER.EXE
IEXPLORE.EXE
USERINIT.EXE
WINLOGON.EXE

But DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Vista and Windows 7 users must right click on the hijackthis icon and click on run as. If the run as option doesn't appear then press and hold the shift key while right clicking on the icon to get it to appear.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

When the hijackthis log appears in a notepad file, click on the edit menu, click select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Come back to your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

After a bit more researching on this SearchUS.com thing, I seemed to have stumbled up on what this mess is all about. According to me new-found information, it is a backdoor virus?hack vehicle. I have run MalwareBytes, as well as my Microsoft Security Essentials programs, and nothing malicious was revealed by either. So, it must be to say that this particular headache has elements about it that the malware/virus programs (at least the ones that "I" have) cannot see/eradicate.

If I cannot find another manner by which to rid myself of this, my next course of action would be to format & restore my computer. The only thing about that is the fact that I don't know what I might have done to get this thing in the first place. And that means that I wouldn't know what NOT to do again.

Well, I am straight now. I am now on the upside of restoring my computer, after formatting. But thanks.

You reformatted over something easily fixable? All you had to do was wait until I got home from work and I would have helped you. Oh well.

John, believe me - I appreciated what you were trying to do for me. I also would have waited to have heard back from you, on my updated response, had the time factor been more favorable. I had a project which had to be finished as soon as possible, and that was the reason why I had to do as I did - when I did it. It wasn't just that one issue, either, that had gotten to me, but a number of things which were causing my computer to act finicky. I was just in the dark about what was causing those issues to be, just as I was about that SearchUS.com thing.

But I really DO thank you for your efforts.

Not a problem. I just can't see a reformat over something like this. Basically it was browser addon, which we could have disabled/uninstalled. Did it take over your home page as well? You definately don't want babylon installed. And I don't think Bing would be causing it. You probably had a multitude of addons installed that you probably didn't know you were aware of.

You are right, and I (too) feel the same way. I really try to hold formatting as the absolute LAST resort, but had to get some computer work taken care of.

I don't know how I came across that mess, in the first place, and fear for inadvertently stepping into that poop pit again. I do know this, though: After getting my PC back up, again, all was well (and still is) with my Yahoo browser. I kinda wanted the Google browser so that I could have tabs for, both, my Gmail & Yahoo mail accounts. So I proceeded to download & install Google Chrome. The second time that I opened that browser up, what do you think happened? Yep - it had been taken over by that Searchus.com. I immediately jumped to my Yahoo (Firefox enabled) homepage to see if it had also affected that. But it hadn't. My next step was to move right into the process of uninstalling Chrome. A shame, too, because I did like that browser.

Even a reinstall of firefox would've most likely fixed it.

And this is capable of happening to Chrome, also. Just be careful what you click on.
