BSOD after formatting laptop HD on desktop

My laptop just died so I decided to sell it on eBay. For that I needed to format the hard drive and decided to hook it up to my Windows 7 desktop and do it on there. It showed up as E: under My Computer. So I just right-clicked it and selected Format. Then I unselected the Quick Format box and clicked Format. When I came back to the computer, Windows was performing this repair task. When it was over and the computer rebooted, I kept getting the BSOD every time after the Windows logo. Then, when I tried to restore computer to an earlier stage, I noticed that my hard drive (the main one, by then I had already unplugged the laptop one) was now showing up as D: instead of the usual C:

If you can't boot back into windows 7 or are getting blue screens then you will need to do a repair install. Boot to the windows 7 dvd and select repair my computer.

If you did exactly what you described, it wouldn't have caused this issue. So I'm lost at why it happened.
