I'll use this as "last call" for my budget gaming rig I'll be buying July 14th. Here it is:

case/psu - Antec SLK1650B ($62.55 - pagecomputer.com)

processor - Amd Sempron 3000+ AM2 OR Amd Athlon 3500+ AM2 ($60.50 - futurepowerpc.com/ $109.00 - zipzoomfly.com)

motherboard - Asrock AM2NFG-SATA2 ($71.66 - newegg.com)

memory - PQI Power Series DDR2 1GB PC24200 533Mhz ($68.98 - newegg.com)

hard drive - Western Digital 80GB Sata-150 ($45.90 - zipzoomfly.com)

floppy drive - NEC black 1.44MB ($10.48 - chiefvalue.com)

dvd-rom drive - Lite-On Black 16x/48X ($22.98 - chiefvalue.com)

video card - eVGA 7600GT PCIe ($161.50 - futurepowerpc.com)

Total Price after shipping: $504.55 w/ Sempron, $553.05 w/ Athlon

I also realize I will need a psu/motherboard pin adapter since my motherboard is 20 pin and my psu solid 24. Let me know of anything else you think I would make sure of, change, really anything. Thanks.

That's a good price for all that. Where are you getting the components? I assume that the CPUs are retail, seeing that they are very hard to find otherwise...

I used a combination of pricewatch and pricegrabber to find the lowest possible prices for the components. I did use my own discretion in terms of which places to buy from, etc. There was only 1 item I believe where I took a VERY minor hit to plan on a more well known retailer. A lot of the stuff was from well known retailers such as newegg, zipzoomfly, and chiefvalue.

Both of the processors are retail, yes. If you were wondering, no I didn't happen to see any oem cpu's, and if there were any, they were more expensive anyway. Intel would probably be a different story, but AMD really did clean up all of their oem stuff I guess.

If you wanted to know what it would cost after shipping to get everything from newegg, it would be $539.39 (sempron), actually a couple dollars more due to figuring the newegg total with a cheaper fdd in my cart.

Since the comp is for gaming, 2GB of ram would be nice. BUT, the comp is also a budget pc, and very budget at that. If I had an extra ~$70 to spend on 1GB more ram, I would be a fool to do so....that money could be put to better use on the cpu or video card.

If I was to cut ~$70, what would I cut? The video card? Yeah that would be fun gaming with a GF 6200 or similar under the hood.

My apologies for this response, but it's not like I have a $3000 computer spec'd out with only 1GB of ram. Or even a $1000 computer. Keep the suggestions coming.

I have thought about a Pentium D, specifically the 805. It would essentially be the same price as the AM2 3500+ I am planning on.

The 3500+ would be a better cpu for me however, as this will be a gaming rig mainly...and anything else it will be used for will require about a Pentium 2. The dual core of the 805 would be nice to have at that price, but by the time I will want dual core (when it will be more useful for gaming), the AMD X2 prices will have dropped significantly. Even if that time was a mere month or two away.

Thanks for the suggestion though, I appreciate it. Btw, am I missing anything with my build? Will I likely need any cables, etc? And I assume that "stock" thermal paste is already on the retail cpu when bought?

My 805 does great in gaming for me. The CPU will come with a stock cooler and thermal paste, but I recommmend ordering a tube of Arctic Silver 5. Cables will come with everything as long as you are ordering retail versions of the parts.

Ok thanks for your input monkeysims. Everything is retail except for the hard drive and floppy drive. What would I likely need? Thanks.
