with $750 you can build your self something decent. proberly a amd skt754 system maybe even a amd skt 939 system would fit into the budget. A P4 is a 3rd possiabity. First I need to know what the $750 need to include. Just the computer? or computer and monitor? or computer monitor and operating system and speakers. or any combination of these things.

Generally what you look for is a nforce3 250 for skt 754 for skt 939 some version of nforce4 or nforce3 ultra. Generally I like to keep to one of the following motherboard companies (MSI,DFI, ASUS,GIGIBYTE, ABIT). you welcome to try a budget motherboard company if you want to save some extra money but my personal experience been bad with budget companies. Now other people have had great experiences so it up to you if you want to take the chance.

These what I found looking at newegg that would fit your budget
By no means am I saying these are the best prices and if you can find good prices else where go for it.

Skt 754
GIGABYTE "GA-K8NS" NVIDIA nForce3 250 $73
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-128-259&depa=1

skt 939 PCI-E
MSI "K8N Neo4-F" NVIDIA nForce4 $89.99
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-130-491&depa=1

I sure your post as I was making this. if you want that athlon 64 3400+ you want the skt 754 motherboard listed above.

ok great thanks, i was looking in to the gigabite one anyways. would it be worth it to go 939 and PCI-E insted?

EDIT: i think i will just for the ease of upgrading in the future.

For $750 you might as well get a S754 setup -- any S939 setup you get for $750 will be obsolete roughly around the same time the S754 setup will be. Sure you can upgrade a part here or there but the bottleneck will move to become the mobo regardless.

Just thought I would throw in a statement here. My computer, below in specs, I just built a few months ago for a little under 800, and I have no complaints about it. I got everything for it from Tigerdirect.com In fact, most of the pieces had some sort of rebate. Only thing not included with my purchase was a monitor and OS.

Diablo Silver ATX Mid-Tower Case
Asus AV8 Motherboard
AMD athlon 64 3400+
1GB Ultra DDR ram (2 sticks of 512)
Geforce fx 5600 256mb video card
120GB HD
DVD/CD/RW drive

hmm, i may do that, its close to what i want, i might change the case, the mobo to the gigabite one, get a 6600 GT and get a 60 GB HD, everything else looks nice.

actualy after some thinking im going to get a mobo with PCI-E and s939 because eventaly i could get a better CPU or video card in the future. and im kinda limited with s754 and AGP. il post what i want soon after i shop around.

If you're getting a K8T800Pro board then the A8V or AV8 (they are different boards) are prolly the best you can get; if you're getting an nVidia board then look elsewhere (like Gigabyte for instance)

Surprisingly, you can get a bit of both worlds ... that is, Socket754+PCIe via http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-135-190&depa=1 ... granted its an ECS board but as long as you're not looking to OC too much you'll be fine with it ... if you want to dig a bit deeper you can have a look at http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-533&depa=1 but do realize that newegg is retarded and can't get their stats properly and as such they've mislabeled a lot of things ... yeah now that im actually reading (cough...polluting my brain) the newegg link they've got the stats all horribly wrong .. to get the actual information visit http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=14&l3=0&model=454&modelmenu=1 (S939 would be better all around but im just presenting another option with budget in mind)
