hey everybody, my friend really needs a new lappy but only has 600 dollars to spend. he really needs it to be windows XP, not Vista, and preferably have office on it. used lappys are fine. thanks for the help. :D

What is he planning on using it for?

hes planning on using it for interent, school work, some music, and instant message. if it doesnt have office, should he get open office. does it read and open and do stuff to MS office documents and Vice Versa?

Yes, OpenOffice does all that, except that there may be some layout issues when using files made on MS Office and vice versa.

I think you will find many used laptops that will do those basic tasks your friend need it for, on ebay or in stores near you. You don't need anything too fancy nor too recent. Frankly, even a 4 year old pentium IV will do...

Yes, I personally like openoffice better because I could never get used to the office 07 interface. All I use office for now is publisher at work. It's fully compatible with ms office, I've never had a problem opening any file.

It really going to be hard to find a laptop with XP now since it went off the market June 30. Dell is charging a extra $50 for the "downgrade" I got a acer with vista on it, and since they did the service pack 1 it's been fine. You can go to newegg and find half a dozon nice laptops with vista, and they should do everything you would need.
