build advice

I am upgrading my wife's dimension 4300, all original 2001 system. It has the original Intel Pentium 4, 1.6 GHz, 256/400/1.75v processor in it. What is the best processor to install that will be a direct plug-n-play for improved performance with the original motherboard? Of course, not on the high end for cost as the computer is my first revamp, and am E-Bay'ing parts cheap for it, but want it to be decently usable afterward. I will tackle a more expensive build when I get my feet wet on this one. I am adding another 512mb memory card in place of the 256mb card in it now to go with the 512 card that was with it, and a video card upgrade, along with a wireless card, and a high speed USB card. I would like the machine to be able to play Ghost Recon...the original, if possible.

In my opinion, don't even waste your time and money with this dinosaur. The money you would have to spend to upgrade, you would almost be about the same price of building a new amd system. I'm sure others will agree with me. Your looking at a better processor(slot 478 i think), the max memory for your system is 2 gb I think, new video card, power supply. And you still might not get the performance needed to play the game. I'm on my phone or I would give you better information on specs.

Agreed with John. That thing is pretty much useless at this point for any type of gaming. I've got a Pentium 4 2.8 GHZ 478 socket processor, 2 GB of RAM, a Geforce 8400 GS and I can barely play anything that's come out in the past 5ish years. And I've pretty much upgraded this machine as far as possible.

Save your money, and build a better system later.

If you wanted experience with handling parts I suppose you could take it apart, clean it thoroughly with pressurize air and the like then put it back together. That will give you some hands on experience for handling parts and will probably give you a slight performance boost as well.

Make sure you know what you're doing though and don't attempt this if you don't feel comfortable cracking open your case and taking things apart.

I'd also like to say everything you do to your system is your responsibility and if anything is messed up please don't blame it on me. :D You really should be fine and not have a any issues as long as you pay attention to how you take it apart and put it back together.

Best of luck.
