build on comp or dell

need some input..

I will be starting grad school in september and would find a desktop useful even though i will have a laptop. so I want to get a comp with an lcd screen and spend as little as possible but still get a decent comp. I don't need anything excessive like a vid card built for gaming or graphics or flashing lights from the tower

I want to get at least a 19 inch lcd and at least a 300 gig hdd, basic vid card, dvd drive and a dvd burner..would obviously need to get mobo and cpu but not really been paying much attention to those lately.

Now i will be mainly using this desktop for internet, word processing, listening to music, watching videos..mostly basic stuff and i would imagine the most expensive thing would be the moniter.

i want to spend 500 at most for everything and i have seen dell deals where they give u a system with a non-celeron cpu and an lcd for less than 500 before. So i'm wondering if i should just wait til around september and just get a dell comp or if i should just buy parts when i see them for a good deal out the store/online or with rebates and assemble it all together once i have the parts, or would probably come out to more than 500?

If you looking for non-gaming machine, those pre-build one usually will fit your purpose. However, unless you need those technical support, I will suggest you build it yourself to save more money.
If you need a machine on Sept, just come back on Aug, too early to say anything now as the hardware change so much within 9 months
