Build question regarding $800 play machine listed by praetor

I am building a computer for gaming and graphic editing and have based most of the parts on the posted comp specs 101 faq.

I may install the maxtor 160gb HD instead of the 250gb one listed in the f.a.q.

I am considering the GeForce 6800 gs, which after rebates is lower then the x800GT02 by $10. I hear the 6800gs is the best card available in the 150-170ish price range. There are several different ones listed, two by eVGA and one by gigabyte, which one should i choose?

Also, what mother board would you suggest for the 6800gs?

So this is the set-up:

Corsair Value Select PC3200 2x512 CL2.5 ($67.98)
NEC 3550A DVDRW ($39.75)
Xclio GOODPOWER 500W [12V@29A] ($48.00)
RAIDMAX xB ATX-528B Case ($22.50)
Maxtor DiamondMax10 160GB 16MB PATA ($72.00)
Athlon 64 X2 3800+ [Manchester, Socket 939 Lidded OmPGA, 2000MHz, ADA3800DAA5BV] ($297.00)
Nvidia GdForce 6800 GS ($149.00/154.00)
Motherboard?

I would get a better case. Rosewill has some nice cheap cases, and many come with their own PSUs if you want to use it. They are supposed to be decent quality. As for the mobo, how much are you willing to pay for it. SLI or no?

the 6800GS is a very good mid range card. i would definetely go with it. it is what i am putting in my computer once i build it

No more then $100. I had no idea what SLI was so I had to go research it. I am not really sure if I plan to install a 2nd gpu in the future or not. If there is a decent SLI board in my price range that is recommended I may go that route. That way the option of adding another card will at least be there.

I was looking at the Elders scrolls Oblivion website and they recommended it as the best card in the range. I lost the link but they said it performed as well as a similiar cards that cost $50+ dollars more.

I hear the 12 pipelines and inability to unlock more is the only issue with the 6800 gs card. VGU's are confusing, the ati X1600pro has 512mb and also has 12 pipelines yet costs less then the 6800 gs. I guess the numbers are decieving, it must lack something the nvidia card has.

Heya

Yeh the graphics card that you have chosen is a good one, better than the originally proposed 6800GS. As to the mobo, it's a good choice as well and very good for overlocking purposes. Have you considered the DFI Lanparty series?

i wss just telling whip-rush what i have picked out, sounds like you thought he was me. i was just showing him a mobo for 88 under the 100 he had budgeted. and the graphics is more than he asked but its a good one. if he can afford it this is the two i'd pick. i did.

The reason why it is priced lower is because of the memory it uses. It got destroyed by the 6800GS in almost every benchmark in this review:

You might also try looking at the 7600GT. The 6800GS has greater memory bandwidth, but slower core and memory clock, and also the 7600GT has greater Shader Operations, Pixel Fill Rate, Texture Fill Rate and Vertex Operations. I think this means the 7600GT is a slightly better card, even though the 6800GS can be o/ced to reach 7600GT speeds.

Also, the 7600GT is $10 cheaper, with the XFX XXX version $10 more, with even higher clocks etc.
